{"id":189779,"date":"2010-02-15T15:35:00","date_gmt":"2010-02-15T20:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/02\/15\/bowing-out-like-a-punk\/"},"modified":"2010-02-15T15:35:00","modified_gmt":"2010-02-15T20:35:00","slug":"bowing-out-like-a-punk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/02\/15\/bowing-out-like-a-punk\/","title":{"rendered":"Bowing Out Like a Punk"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 0px 10px; padding: 5px; width: 394px; float: right; text-align: center;\"><object height=\"231\" width=\"384\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/dVdRW-Jj4uU&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/dVdRW-Jj4uU&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" height=\"231\" width=\"384\"><\/embed><\/object><br \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Yeah, like this will go over with Indiana voters<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Evan Bayh <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748704431404575067330696124758.html\">will not stand for reelection<\/a>.<sup>*<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Yes, unlike Chris Dodd, who announced well in advance, and was frank about the reason, that he thought that he would lose, Evan Bayh&#8217;s announcement comes as a complete surprise to to everyone, with 1 day left to the primary filing deadline, and the only person close to having the signatures necessary being a protest candate, <a href=\"http:\/\/tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2010\/02\/another-dem-already-in-race-for-bayhs-seat----but-doesnt-have-the-needed-signatures-yet.php\">Tamyra d&#8217;Ippolito, a caf\u00e9 owner in Bloomington<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If she gets the necessary signatures, 500 signatures in each Congressional district, it means that if any Democrat wants to run against her, they will have to do so as a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">write in candidate<\/span> in the May primary.<\/p>\n<p>If she gets the signatures, expect the Dem establishment to challenge <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">every<\/span> signature.<\/p>\n<p>If she doesn&#8217;t get the signatures, then the Indiana Democrat Party appoints a nominee, with the likely suspects being, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/theplumline.whorunsgov.com\/house-dems\/dems-zero-in-on-three-possible-replacements-for-evan-bayh\/\">Dem Reps Brad Ellsworth and Baron Hill, and Evansville mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m hoping for the mayor, because I don&#8217;t care about the municipal government of Evansville, but I do care about the composition of the United States House of Representatives, and both Ellsworth and Hill are Blue Dogs.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Mother Jones<\/span> nailed it when they said, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/motherjones.com\/kevin-drum\/2010\/02\/evan-bayh-quits-huff\">Evan Bayh quits in a huff<\/a>&#8220;, because the manner of his withdrawal makes it clear that he is doing this in a way most calculated to cause damage to the Democratic Party, either by leaving them without a viable candidate for the Senate, or by pulling in a candidate from one of the Democratic Congressmen, which leaves <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">that<\/span> seat open.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, most of the potential big name Republican candidates have already elected not to run, which leaves former Senator Dan Coats, who, as <a href=\"http:\/\/mydd.com\/2010\/2\/14\/dan-coats-so\">Charles Lemos shows<\/a>, moved out of the state, and has to <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">rent<\/span> a house to run.  (See video)<\/p>\n<p>Still I do not think that this is an attempt to jam up the Republicans, he did it out of pique.<\/p>\n<p>Why else would he have <a href=\"http:\/\/firstread.msnbc.msn.com\/archive\/2010\/02\/15\/2202271.aspx\">waited until after the news was public to tell Harry Reid<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>I agree with Mark Ambinder who <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/marcambinder\/status\/9145398636\">nails it in a tweet<\/a>, either 100 characters, or 81 if you don&#8217;t count spaces:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>Why Bayh? He wanted to be POTUS and came to hate the Senate and liberal activists.
