{"id":189790,"date":"2010-02-13T20:19:00","date_gmt":"2010-02-14T01:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/02\/13\/well-here-is-an-interesting-local-startup\/"},"modified":"2010-02-13T20:19:00","modified_gmt":"2010-02-14T01:19:00","slug":"well-here-is-an-interesting-local-startup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/02\/13\/well-here-is-an-interesting-local-startup\/","title":{"rendered":"Well, Here is an Interesting Local Startup"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 0px 10px; padding: 5px; width: 380px; float: right; text-align: center;\">Click for full size<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/img59.imageshack.us\/img59\/9624\/100304511268.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img59.imageshack.us\/img59\/9624\/100304511268.jpg\" bordercolor=\"white\" border=\"0\" width=\"370\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><br \/>Basic VTOL Configuration<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/img200.imageshack.us\/img200\/2081\/100498654117.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img200.imageshack.us\/img200\/2081\/100498654117.jpg\" bordercolor=\"white\" border=\"0\" width=\"370\" \/><\/a><br \/>Wind Tunnel Testing<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/img651.imageshack.us\/img651\/9307\/100479043913.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img651.imageshack.us\/img651\/9307\/100479043913.jpg\" bordercolor=\"white\" border=\"0\" width=\"370\" \/><\/a><br \/>Control Surface Tests<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"http:\/\/www.adflightsystems.com\/objects\/mediaplayer.swf\" style=\"\" name=\"mediaplayer\" quality=\"high\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" flashvars=\"width=384&amp;height=222&amp;file=http:\/\/www.adflightsystems.com\/i\/gallery\/10036.flv\" height=\"222\" width=\"384\"><\/embed><\/div>\n<p> Mission scenario video<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">Images and video, American Dynamics Flight Systems<sup>*<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Aviation Week<\/span> has noted that a <span>startup<\/span> company with a interesting take on a VTOL <span>UAV<\/span> has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/aw\/generic\/story.jsp?id=news\/asd\/2010\/02\/11\/02.xml&amp;headline=Maryland%20Funds%20Work%20On%20VTOL%20Unmanned%20Aircraft&amp;channel=defense\">received funding from the Maryland Industrial Partnerships (MIPS) program for wind tunnel tests on their AD-150 <span>UAS<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The company, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adflightsystems.com\/\">American Dynamics Flight Systems<\/a>, has an interesting take on the tilt rotor system, and I don&#8217;t mean just their use of shrouded <span>propulsors<\/span>, but the fact that they can operate the <span>propulsors<\/span> asymmetrically in order to provide control inputs.<\/p>\n<p>The final product is looking to be a 14\u00bd foot long vehicle that can carry a roughly 500 pound payload at 300 <span>kts<\/span>, which places it within the requirements for the US Marine Corps &#8220;Group 4&#8221; drone requirement.<\/p>\n<p>Given the specifications, it certainly will be able to keep up with the Osprey, though I have not seen any range data.<\/p>\n<p>The company&#8217;s other products are the High Torque Aerial Lift (<span>HTAL<\/span>) <span>propulsor<\/span>, which is used on the AD-150, and an improved launcher for the 2.75&#8243; <span>FFAR<\/span> called the, &#8220;<span>LH<\/span> Series Launcher,&#8221; which is lighter and more streamlined than the existing launchers, and so more suited to <span>UAVs<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>There seems to be a fair amount of &#8220;neat&#8221; tech there, the AD-150 appears to be leveraging on their <span>HTAL<\/span> <span>propulsor<\/span>, and their <span>LH<\/span> launcher appears to fill a real need.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, with the advent of guidance heads for the 2.75&#8243; rocket, <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/search?q=apkws\"><span>APKWS<\/span> and <span>DAGRS<\/span><\/a>, it is rather likely that this will become the weapon of choice for <span>UAVS<\/span>,<\/p>\n<p>The rocket, which is smaller, lighter, and has a smaller warhead than the <span>AGM<\/span>-114 Hellfire, which means that more can be carried with less collateral damage.<\/p>\n<p>Using the hellfire to take out a guy on a motorbike, or a bunch of guys in an SUV, is kind of like using an elephant gun as a fly-swatter.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, I emailed them about getting a tour of their <span>Jessup<\/span>, Maryland facility, and will be having a tour on Wednesday, assuming that their schedule or the vicissitudes of mother nature (more snow predicted next week) don&#8217;t intrude.<\/p>\n<p>I will be posting a request for any ideas for questions on a shorter post, which will remain at the top of the list until late Tuesday evening, so I&#8217;ve closed comments on this post, if there is anything you want to know, post it there.
