{"id":189805,"date":"2010-02-12T09:18:00","date_gmt":"2010-02-12T14:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/02\/12\/economics-update-a-day-late-4\/"},"modified":"2010-02-12T09:18:00","modified_gmt":"2010-02-12T14:18:00","slug":"economics-update-a-day-late-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/02\/12\/economics-update-a-day-late-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update (a Day Late)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, yesterday was, as Atrios says, jobless Thursday, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSN1416882220100211\">unemployment claims fell more than forecast<\/a>, falling to just 440,000, which is still not enough for an increase in non-farm employment.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2010\/02\/11\/news\/economy\/presidents_economic_report\/index.htm?section=money_topstories&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+rss%2Fmoney_topstories+%28Top+Stories%29\">White House is predicting about 95,000 new jobs a month being created in 2010<\/a>, but based on some quick numbers, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/mlr\/2001\/11\/art2tab.pdf\">1.1% annual labor force growth<\/a> times <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_countries_by_labour_force\">155,200,000 people in the US labor<\/a> force divided by 12 months, there need to be about 142,000 jobs created each month just to accommodate natural growth, so things aren&#8217;t getting better, they are just getting worse more slowly.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the news out of California, that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sco.ca.gov\/eo_pressrel_6504.html\">tax receipts are well in excess of predictions<\/a>, is legitimately good news.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, in a discovery of the blatantly obvious, a the TARP&#8217;s Congressional Oversight Panel has determined that <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2010\/02\/11\/news\/economy\/tarp_commercial_loans\/index.htm?section=money_topstories&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+rss%2Fmoney_topstories+%28Top+Stories%29\">commercial real estate is imploding<\/a>, and this threatens the viability of many small and mid sized bank. \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026Hoocoodanode?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, yesterday was, as Atrios says, jobless Thursday, and unemployment claims fell more than forecast, falling to just 440,000, which is still not enough for an increase in non-farm employment.
