{"id":189888,"date":"2010-02-03T22:31:00","date_gmt":"2010-02-04T03:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/02\/03\/economics-update-96\/"},"modified":"2010-02-03T22:31:00","modified_gmt":"2010-02-04T03:31:00","slug":"economics-update-96","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/02\/03\/economics-update-96\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the &#8220;recovery, my tuchas&#8221; division, we have the latest ADP estimate as to job losses, which shows that yet again, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\/id\/35213567\">private sector employment fell<\/a>, though the panglossian financial &#8220;journalists&#8221;, are now expecting employment to grow this month.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think so, seeing as how this is when the so-called birth\/death adjustment gets rejiggered for the new year (more on this later).<\/p>\n<p>Along with this, the <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748704259304575042971952821924.html?mod=rss_whats_news_us&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+wsj%2Fxml%2Frss%2F3_7011+%28WSJ.com%3A+What%27s+News+US%29\">Institute for Supply Management&#8217;s index of nonmanufacturing activity continues to remain in the doldrums<\/a>, which is better than it was early last year, but still does not point to employment increases.<\/p>\n<p>In the nexus of real estate and banking, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\/id\/35213452\">mortgage applications were up sharply this week<\/a>, but this was refinance activity, not home purchases.<\/p>\n<p>In the old favorites of currency and energy, the <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2010\/02\/03\/markets\/dollar\/index.htm\">dollar rose on the ADP report<\/a>, as well as concerns about the potential Greek meltdown, while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSTRE5B30OK20100203?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=businessNews&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+reuters%2FbusinessNews+%28News+%2F+US+%2F+Business+News%29\">oil fell slightly on reports of strong inventories<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the &#8220;recovery, my tuchas&#8221; division, we have the latest ADP estimate as to job losses, which shows that yet again, private sector employment fell, though the panglossian financial &#8220;journalists&#8221;, are now expecting employment to grow this month.
