{"id":190042,"date":"2010-01-13T19:03:00","date_gmt":"2010-01-14T00:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/01\/13\/economics-update-103\/"},"modified":"2010-01-13T19:03:00","modified_gmt":"2010-01-14T00:03:00","slug":"economics-update-103","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/01\/13\/economics-update-103\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 0px 10px; width: 400px; float: right; text-align: center;\">Click for full size<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/img17.imageshack.us\/img17\/5601\/railtrafficdecember6254.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img17.imageshack.us\/img17\/5601\/railtrafficdecember6254.jpg\" bordercolor=\"white\" border=\"0\" width=\"390\" \/><\/a> <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">H\/t <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calculatedriskblog.com\/2010\/01\/rail-traffic-in-2009-lowest-since-at.html?\">Calculated Risk<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p>The Federal Reserve has released its &#8220;Summary of Commentary on Current Economic Conditions&#8221;, better known as the &#8220;Beige Book&#8221;, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/01\/13\/AR2010011303402.html?hpid=topnews\">there has been a small improvement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure where the improvement is, since transportation indices continue to disappoint, with the American Association of Railroads&#8217; report on carload traffic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/aar-reports-2009-carload-traffic-at-lowest-level-since-1988-81322392.html\">showing the lowest level since 1988<\/a>, and if goods aren&#8217;t moving, then people aren&#8217;t buying.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the trend in mortgages, with refinancing increasing and mortgages for purchases falling, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mbaa.org\/NewsandMedia\/PressCenter\/71558.htm\">continued this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Overseas, the GDPs of <a href=\"http:\/\/business.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/business\/economics\/article6986312.ece\">Britain<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\/id\/34837011\">Germany <\/a>both suffered the largest drop since before the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> World War, -4.8% and -5.0% respectively, while in Japan, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=afeto8ifZ0bs&amp;pos=4\">machinery orders fell sharply in November<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the world of US government finance, the <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2010\/01\/13\/news\/economy\/treasury_budget\/index.htm\">US budget deficit doubled year over year in December<\/a>, which probably had something to do with <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2010\/01\/13\/markets\/bondcenter\/bonds\/index.htm\">bond prices being mixed<\/a>, with the 10-year bond falling slightly, and the 30-year bond rising slightly.  (Yields move in the opposite direction of prices)<\/p>\n<p>In energy, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2010\/01\/13\/markets\/oil\/\">oil fell below $80\/bbl<\/a>, on reports of increasing US fuel inventories.<\/p>\n<p>In currency, the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2010\/01\/13\/markets\/dollar\/index.htm\">dollar was mixed<\/a>, down slightly versus the Pound and Euro, but up slightly versus the Yen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Click for full size H\/t Calculated Risk The Federal Reserve has released its &#8220;Summary of Commentary on Current Economic Conditions&#8221;, better known as the &#8220;Beige Book&#8221;, and there has been a small improvement.
