It <span>actually<\/span> made <span>the<\/span> Federal Reserve <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">less<\/span> transparent.<br \/><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nakedcapitalism.com\/2009\/11\/audit-the-fed-bill-attempted-saturday-night-massacre-underway.html\">Yves Smith rather colorfully, and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">very<\/span> accurately described the amendment as<\/a>, &#8220;Tantamount to saying you are permitted to operate a strip club as long as the patrons are prohibited from looking at <span>un<\/span> or <span>underclad<\/span> bodies.&#8221; (<span>heh<\/span>)<\/p>\n<p>What followed was a bit of theater, where the opponents of the audit, rolled out economists who argued that the audit proposal was destructive, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2009\/11\/18\/economists-opposing-fed-a_n_362287.html\">neglected to mention their own financial ties to the Federal Reserve<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102);\">\n<p>But far from a broad cross-section, the &#8220;prominent economists&#8221; lobbying on behalf of the Watt bill are in fact deeply involved with the Federal Reserve. Seven of the eight are either currently on the Fed&#8217;s payroll or have been in the past. <\/p>\n<p>The Fed connections are not outlined in the letter sent around to committee members on Wednesday, but are publicly discernible through a review of their resumes, which are all posted online. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It should also be noted that the publishing staff of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2009\/09\/07\/priceless-how-the-federal_n_278805.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">almost every significant economic academic journal<\/span> has similar conflicts of interest with regard to the Federal reserve<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Well, despite the best efforts of the Federal Reserve, and Barney Frank, and Mel Watt, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2009\/11\/19\/fed-beaten-bill-to-audit_n_364546.html\">Paul\/<span>Grayson<\/span> audit bill was passed by the House Finance <span>Committee<\/span> by a vote of 43-26<\/a>, 15 <span>Dems<\/span> voted for it, in addition to all the Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, this will progress further, but my guess is that the knives will be coming out on this.<\/p>\n<p>Major props to Ryan Grim of <span>HuffPo<\/span>, he&#8217;s the author of the <span>HuffPo<\/span> links here, who has been on this like white on Rice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alan Grayson on the Bill On Tuesday, we were getting reports from there was a conspiracy afoot to emasculate the bill in the dead of night, using an amendment put forward by Representative Mel Watt (D-NC) wherein the GAO could &#8220;audit&#8221; the Fed, but could not actually get detailed information.
