{"id":190711,"date":"2009-11-01T17:34:00","date_gmt":"2009-11-01T22:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/11\/01\/this-actually-reveals-a-deeper-truth\/"},"modified":"2009-11-01T17:34:00","modified_gmt":"2009-11-01T22:34:00","slug":"this-actually-reveals-a-deeper-truth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/11\/01\/this-actually-reveals-a-deeper-truth\/","title":{"rendered":"This Actually Reveals a Deeper Truth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img245.imageshack.us\/img245\/1439\/gophalloween.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" width=\"400\" \/>There is a distinctly Randroid branch of the Republican party, who follows Alisa Zinov&#8217;yevna Rosenbaum&#8217;s (Ayn Rand) philosophy of Objectivism, and as such, see activities like giving candies to trick or treaters as actually being <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">evil<\/span>, because any sort of activity which benefits the community is <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">evil<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>To their mind, the only good is self interest, hence the title of the only Ayn Rand book that I have ever read, <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The Virtue of Selfishness<\/span>, which I found juvenile, as well as horribly written,<sup>*<\/sup> when I reviewed it as an extra credit assignment in my  Philosophy of Literature class in <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">high school<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>It must be remembered that a significant portion of Republicans are actually <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">philosophically opposed to the very idea of community<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>H\/t Cthulhu<sup>\u2020<\/sup> for the cartoon.<\/p>\n<p><sup>*<\/sup><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">Seriously, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-size:78%;\" >really<\/span><span style=\"font-size:78%;\"> badly written.  It was worse than reading Immanuel Kant, and that sh%$ was painful to read.<\/span><br \/><sup>\u2020<\/sup><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">No, not the unspeakably malevolent super-being, the contributor to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shortskoolbus.com\/phpBB-3.0.0\/phpBB3\/index.php\">Shortskoolbus BBS<\/a>.<\/span><sup>\u2021<\/sup><br \/><sup>\u2021<\/sup><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">OK, I&#8217;ve never seen the two of them together, so Cthulhu might actually be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-size:78%;\" >the<\/span><span style=\"font-size:78%;\"> Cthulhu, but the mere fact that he is on a BBS, interacting with humans<\/span><sup>\u00a7<\/sup><span style=\"font-size:78%;\"> would seem to mitigate against this.<\/span><br \/><sup>\u00a7<\/sup><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">Yes, I know, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-size:78%;\" >this is the internet, where no one knows if you are a dog<\/span><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is a distinctly Randroid branch of the Republican party, who follows Alisa Zinov&#8217;yevna Rosenbaum&#8217;s (Ayn Rand) philosophy of Objectivism, and as such, see activities like giving candies to trick or treaters as actually being evil, because any sort of activity which benefits the community is evil.
