{"id":191058,"date":"2009-09-29T10:04:00","date_gmt":"2009-09-29T15:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/09\/29\/well-now-we-know-how-lame-the-new-york-times-is\/"},"modified":"2009-09-29T10:04:00","modified_gmt":"2009-09-29T15:04:00","slug":"well-now-we-know-how-lame-the-new-york-times-is","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/09\/29\/well-now-we-know-how-lame-the-new-york-times-is\/","title":{"rendered":"Well, Now We Know How Lame the New York Times Is"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It appears that the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">New York Times<\/span>  has decided that they do not spend enough time paying attention to deranged dishonest right wing stories, and their response is to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/09\/27\/opinion\/27pubed.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss&amp;pagewanted=all\">assign an (unnamed, lest he get stern emails) editor to the giving blow jobs to right wingers beat<\/a>, to ensure that all of their <span>bullsh<\/span>&amp;% gets mainstream press coverage:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>Jill <span>Abramson<\/span>, the managing editor for news, agreed with me that the paper was \u201cslow off the mark,\u201d and blamed \u201cinsufficient tuned-in-<span>ness<\/span> to the issues that are dominating Fox News and talk radio.\u201d She and Bill Keller, the executive editor, said last week that they would now<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> assign an editor to monitor opinion media<\/span> and brief them frequently on bubbling controversies. Keller declined to identify the editor, saying he wanted to spare that person \u201ca bombardment of e-mails and excoriation in the <span>blogosphere<\/span>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">emphasis mine)<br \/><\/span>Two points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This story was, and always will be, bulls$%#, and so the coverage <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">should<\/span> be on the politics, because a close examination of the real story, shows <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">no story<\/span>.<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Having \u201cinsufficient tuned-in-<span>ness<\/span> to the issues that are dominating Fox News and talk radio,\u201d is a mark of journalistic <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">success<\/span>, not journalist <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">failure<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li>Anyone who claims to be a journalist, much less an editor, but is afraid to do their job because they will get nasty emails, should not be working in journalism.
