{"id":191247,"date":"2009-09-09T20:20:00","date_gmt":"2009-09-10T01:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/09\/09\/economics-update-154\/"},"modified":"2009-09-09T20:20:00","modified_gmt":"2009-09-10T01:20:00","slug":"economics-update-154","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/09\/09\/economics-update-154\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 0px 10px; width: 390px; float: right; text-align: center;\">\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153); font-weight: bold;\"><p><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Good news everyone!<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img132.imageshack.us\/img132\/6152\/005professor0079650.png\" width=\"350\" \/><br \/>I invented a device that makes you read this in your head using my voice!<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>Well, the Fed&#8217;s Beige Book, more formally known as the &#8220;Summary of Commentary on Current Economic Conditions&#8221;, came out today, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/32760488\">they are seeing signs of improvement<\/a> (also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=adO.FvqQxB2c\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It seems to me that we are talking about evidence of a bottom, or at least a moderation, as opposed to improvement, but it could be a prelude to a recovery, or a breather on the way down, but either way, it&#8217;s good news.<\/p>\n<p>We still have CRE and insurance meltdowns to deal with.<\/p>\n<p>There is also good news from Moody&#8217;s, that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\/id\/32729522\">there is no expectation that they will cut the ratings on sovereign debt for any of the major industrialized nations<\/a>, so the ratings of, &#8220;U.S., U.K., Germany, France. and Spain,&#8221; are safe.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, if they are so safe, why did they even have to make this statement?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img5.imageshack.us\/img5\/6857\/chartlibor2030435137.gif\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" \/>We also have further evidence of the credit markets thawing, with <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/09\/09\/markets\/bondcenter\/bonds_credit\/index.htm?section=money_topstories\">the 3-month Libor interbank lending rate hitting a record low<\/a>, and the TED Spread, basically the interest rate spread between public and private debt, <a href=\"http:\/\/moneywatch.bnet.com\/investing\/blog\/wise-investing\/good-news-update-ted-spread-lending-liquidity\/830\/\">falling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The dropping interest rates, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\/id\/32752695\">kicked mortgage applications to a 3 month high<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Still, in the real world, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.housingwire.com\/2009\/09\/08\/house-prices-fall-05-in-july-ias\/\">single family home prices fell by 0.5% in July<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/money\/economy\/2009-09-08-bankruptcy-filings-up_N.htm\">bankruptcy filings are up 22% in August year over year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In energy we are now seeing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=abifQUz7TF04\">statements from OPEC that there will be no changes to quotas<\/a> which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601110&amp;sid=aenV1UfZ6Wb0\">drove prices up 21\u00a2 to $71.31\/bbl<\/a>, despite increases in inventories.<\/p>\n<p>In currency, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601110&amp;sid=agiqzP7lGxxk\">dollar fell to a near 10-month low<\/a>, despite a slight bump following the release of the Beige Book, to $1.4562:\u20ac1.0000 and $1.0000:\u00a591.61.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Good news everyone!I invented a device that makes you read this in your head using my voice!
