(See top picture)<\/p>\n<p>Also, it appears that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601109&amp;sid=avYl515PP_pM\">US companies are still cutting temporary employees from their payrolls<\/a>, (bottom pic) and temps tend to be both the first in the door, and the first out the door.<sup>*<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>On Europe, we are getting conflicting signals, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=ae8H7LNVCA4Q\">consumer confidence in the U.K. hitting its highest level since May, 2008<\/a>, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601068&amp;sid=az2XwCR..X8g\">German industrial output falling in July<\/a>, production rose 0.8% in June, but fell 0.9% in July, against a consensus estimate of a gain of 1.6%&#8230;.Ouch.<\/p>\n<p>The intersection of banking and consumers in the US ain&#8217;t doing well, with  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=aAYZpSNGocVM\">U.S. consumer credit falling at a 10% annual rate<\/a>, or $21.6 billion, and Standard &amp; Poor&#8217;s noting that despite a slight improvement in July, it expects <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/businessNews\/idUSTRE58752720090908?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=businessNews\">credit card write-offs to continue to increase<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile if you follow the stock market, perhaps you should <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/09\/08\/business\/economy\/08buffett.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss&amp;pagewanted=all\">listen to Warren Buffett<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>Mr. Buffett declined to predict the short-run course of the stock market. But corporate data from Berkshire shows his company was <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">selling more stocks than it was buying<\/span> by the end of the second quarter, according to Bloomberg News. Its spending on stocks fell to the lowest level in more than five years, although the company is still deftly picking up shares in some companies and buying corporate and government debt.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">emphasis mine<\/span>)<\/p>\n<p>So he is moving out of stock, and getting completely out of Moody&#8217;s. (more on <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">that<\/span> in another post.)<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, we have some gold bug news, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601110&amp;sid=ayamNAzxdOdI\">gold topping $1000.00\/oz<\/a> (troy).<\/p>\n<p>In related news, the value of the dollar and gold tend to be inversely related, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=aGI400UnO83c\">dollar fell to its lowest level vs. the Euro this year<\/a>, $1.4491:\u20ac1.0000.<\/p>\n<p>We also saw this <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/09\/08\/markets\/oil.reut\/index.htm\">pushing up the price of oil today<\/a>, up 4.5% to $71.10\/bbl.<\/p>\n<p><sup>*<\/sup><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">Something I am <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-size:78%;\" >all too familiar with<\/span><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">, having done contract technical work for the past 17 years.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Retail Employment Courtesy of Calculated RiskClick for full size pic Temp hire numbers courtesy BloombergClick for full size pic So, let&#8217;s start with employment today, shall we?
