{"id":191284,"date":"2009-09-06T06:23:00","date_gmt":"2009-09-06T11:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/09\/06\/oshkosh-wins-fmtv-contract\/"},"modified":"2009-09-06T06:23:00","modified_gmt":"2009-09-06T11:23:00","slug":"oshkosh-wins-fmtv-contract","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/09\/06\/oshkosh-wins-fmtv-contract\/","title":{"rendered":"Oshkosh Wins FMTV Contract"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img42.imageshack.us\/img42\/8136\/landfmtvfamilylg.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" \/>It beat out BAE subsidiary Stewart and Stevenson<sup>*<\/sup> to win the contract for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defenseindustrydaily.com\/FMTV-2010-2015-Oshkosh-Wins-The-Re-Compete-05744\/\">FMTV Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles<\/a>, a bunch of cab-over 4&#215;4 2\u00bd ton and 6&#215;6 5 ton transport vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>I am surprised that they beat out Stewart and Stevenson.<\/p>\n<p>This is not because of any great knowledge of capability in S&amp;S, but because in the various attempts to compete this deal, competitors have always been leery making of a bid because of the low quality of the drawing package&#8230;..Talk about screwing up in reverse.<\/p>\n<p>I guess that the DoD finally got around to insisting that a proper drawing package be produced, and once there was a drawing package that allowed other manufacturers to compete, it was inevitable that the award would go to a company with actual experience in making trucks.<\/p>\n<p>The background of the original contract award is a bit &#8220;colorful,&#8221; BTW.<\/p>\n<p><sup>*<\/sup><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">Full disclosure I worked at Stewart &amp; Stevenson, Tactical Vehicle Systems, in Sealy, TX on the FMTV in 1992 and 1993.<\/span><sup>\u2020<\/sup><br \/><sup>\u2020<\/sup><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">Yes, I have worked everywhere.
