{"id":191342,"date":"2009-08-31T22:11:00","date_gmt":"2009-09-01T03:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/08\/31\/the-very-modern-model-of-a-modern-republican-candidate\/"},"modified":"2009-08-31T22:11:00","modified_gmt":"2009-09-01T03:11:00","slug":"the-very-modern-model-of-a-modern-republican-candidate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/08\/31\/the-very-modern-model-of-a-modern-republican-candidate\/","title":{"rendered":"The Very Modern Model of a Modern Republican Candidate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Republican Virginia gubernatorial candidate Robert McDonald mentioned in an interview with the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Washington Post<\/span> that he did a masters thesis on &#8220;welfare policy,&#8221; and the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Post<\/span> went and did some real journalism: they <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2009\/08\/29\/AR2009082902434.html\">went to the library at Regent University<\/a>, Pat Robertson&#8217;s diploma mill, which was called Christian Broadcasting Network University at the time that he filed his papers.<\/p>\n<p>What they found was shocking, though not surprising:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Called working women &#8220;detrimental to the family&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Opposition to birth control.<\/li>\n<li>Absolute ban on abortions, including where rape, incest, and the health of the mother are issues.<\/li>\n<li>Covenant marriage (basically making divorces much more difficult).<\/li>\n<li>Support for religious school vouchers.<\/li>\n<li>Opposed tax breaks for child care expenses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I am so not shocked that he is a right wing medieval nut job, but I think that some Virginia voters might be.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m shocked though that the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Washington Post<\/span> actually allowed real journalism to reach its pages.
