{"id":191374,"date":"2009-08-27T08:52:00","date_gmt":"2009-08-27T13:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/08\/27\/economics-update-yesterdays-2\/"},"modified":"2009-08-27T08:52:00","modified_gmt":"2009-08-27T13:52:00","slug":"economics-update-yesterdays-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/08\/27\/economics-update-yesterdays-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update, Yesterday&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img30.imageshack.us\/img30\/9915\/truckingjuly4904703.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" width=\"400\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img43.imageshack.us\/img43\/278\/2009075086233.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" width=\"400\" \/>And actually Tuesday&#8217;s too.<\/p>\n<p>Between helping my kids try out recipes for a cooking contest, and general laziness, I&#8217;ve let it slide.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, the big news is that <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/08\/25\/news\/economy\/consumer_confidence_august\/index.htm?postversion=2009082511\">consumer confidence beat expectations<\/a>, and actually went into &#8220;optimistic&#8221; territory, though as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prospect.org\/csnc\/blogs\/beat_the_press_archive?month=08&amp;year=2009&amp;base_name=consumer_confidence_expectatio\">Dean Baker observes<\/a>most of the increse in the index is, &#8220;Attributable to a 10.1 percentage point increase in the expectations index,&#8221; which, &#8220;is much more volatile than the current conditions index and has little relationship to spending,&#8221; so the numbers are not about hopped up consumers bringing on a recovery.<\/p>\n<p>We also have reports that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=ajJywEE6RIqI\">home sales and durable goods orders have increased<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calculatedriskblog.com\/2009\/08\/truck-tonnage-index-increased-21.html\">American Trucking Association&#8217;s Tonnage Index<\/a> (top pic) all increased in July, though I will address how the home sales\/prices may be a Chimera in a later post, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2009\/08\/26\/AR2009082601389.html\">durable goods orders are not as good as they appears<\/a>, ex-Boeing and defense, they actually fall:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>Orders for non-defense capital goods excluding aircraft, a barometer of business investment, fell 0.3 percent in July after rising 3.6 percent in June.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Additionally, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calculatedriskblog.com\/2009\/08\/philly-fed-state-coincident-indicators.html\">Philadelphia Fed State Coincident Indicator numbers came out<\/a> (bottom pic), and all but 4 states are still contracting.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calculatedriskblog.com\/2009\/08\/mba-purchase-index-increases-slightly.html\">mortgage apps were up slightly this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We also had a major downgrade of an insurer, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601110&amp;sid=ahUT_vNamSn4\">had its rating cut from AAA to AA+ by S&amp;P<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I expect there to be more of this in insurance.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a near record auction, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601110&amp;sid=aigEhwzsQCJ0\">US Treasuries were basically unchanged<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the consumer confidence <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/08\/26\/markets\/dollar.reut\/index.htm\">drove the dollar up<\/a>, though <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/08\/25\/markets\/oil.reut\/index.htm\">oil fell<\/a>, on the expectation of increases in inventories in today&#8217;s report.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>And actually Tuesday&#8217;s too.
