{"id":191445,"date":"2009-08-15T21:14:00","date_gmt":"2009-08-16T02:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/08\/15\/zimbabwe-update-5\/"},"modified":"2009-08-15T21:14:00","modified_gmt":"2009-08-16T02:14:00","slug":"zimbabwe-update-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/08\/15\/zimbabwe-update-5\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a move that has &#8220;Epic Fail&#8221; written all over it, the Police are attempting to staff up by <a href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/200908061025.html\">actively recruiting ZANU-PF youth militia members to the force<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As if the state security apparatus were not brutal, politicized and corrupt already.<\/p>\n<p>We also have Arthur Mutambara, head of the MDC-M, stating the obvious, and noting that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thezimbabwestandard.com\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=21022:mdc-has-no-control-admits-mutambara&amp;catid=31:zimbabwe-stories&amp;Itemid=66\">neither the MDC-M nor Tsvangerai&#8217;s MDC-T have any meaningful control of the government<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the brighter side, we are now seeing divisions in the ZANU-PF over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voanews.com\/english\/Africa\/2009-08-13-voa48.cfm\">who should succeed late Vice President Joseph Msika<\/a>, and it appears that the split is between the people originally from ZANU (Robert Mugabe) and PF-ZAPU (Joshua Nkomo).<\/p>\n<p>One hopes that the MDC, both -T and -M, can use this discord to get some meaningful influence in this dynamic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a move that has &#8220;Epic Fail&#8221; written all over it, the Police are attempting to staff up by actively recruiting ZANU-PF youth militia members to the force.
