{"id":191586,"date":"2009-07-24T10:12:00","date_gmt":"2009-07-24T15:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/07\/24\/its-a-half-step\/"},"modified":"2009-07-24T10:12:00","modified_gmt":"2009-07-24T15:12:00","slug":"its-a-half-step","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/07\/24\/its-a-half-step\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s a Half Step"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Barack Obama is now proposing <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB124831738512274811.html#mod=rss_whats_news_us\">a tax on &#8220;risky&#8221; financial transactions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The problem here is two fold:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Many of the risky financial transactions were there to skirt regulations, and this just creates another incentive for people to do this again.<\/li>\n<li>Many of the problems with our markets come from people who attempt to generate minuscule profits across thousands, or millions, of trades, <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/search?q=front+running+goldman\">Goldman Sachs front-running the entire US stock market<\/a> comes to mind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The solution to fixing this is to make rapid-fire low margin speculation unprofitable, and the way to do this is to  to tax <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">all<\/span> financial transactions at something like \u00bc-\u00bd%.<\/p>\n<p>For the investor, this is an infinitesimal cost of doing business, but it puts the rampant speculator out of business.<\/p>\n<p>It eliminates regulatory arbitrage, and could go a long way toward paying for health care reform.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Barack Obama is now proposing a tax on &#8220;risky&#8221; financial transactions.
