{"id":191637,"date":"2009-07-17T05:03:00","date_gmt":"2009-07-17T10:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/07\/17\/economics-update-179\/"},"modified":"2009-07-17T05:03:00","modified_gmt":"2009-07-17T10:03:00","slug":"economics-update-179","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/07\/17\/economics-update-179\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img41.imageshack.us\/img41\/2971\/data8877669.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" width=\"300\" \/>Yeah, it&#8217;s actually yesterday&#8217;s&#8230;.What can I say.<\/p>\n<p>Since Thursday is new jobless day, we lead with the fact that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/31939854\">new claims for unemployment fell to a 6 month low<\/a>, though it must noted that these are <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">seasonally adjusted<\/span> figures, and the still accounts for the spike from the July shutdowns of the GM and Chrysler, which happened earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>We have two other indices moving in opposite directions, with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calculatedriskblog.com\/2009\/07\/philly-fed-regions-manufacturing-still.html\">Philadelphia Fed industrial index falling<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calculatedriskblog.com\/2009\/07\/nahb-builder-confidence-increases.html\">NAHB builder confidence index rising<\/a>, but I&#8217;m more inclined to go with the Philly Fed, it&#8217;s an index of activity, not sentiment, and also because RealtyTrac is reporting that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=aHAbmgVoHjA4\">foreclosure filings hit a new record for the first half of the year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mortgage rates <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/07\/16\/real_estate\/mortgage_rates\/index.htm?postversion=2009071612\">stayed pretty much flat over the last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In energy, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/07\/16\/news\/economy\/gas\/index.htm\">retail gasoline continues to fall<\/a>, hitting a 2 month low, and <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/07\/16\/markets\/oil.reut\/index.htm\">crude oil fell<\/a> on demand concerns.<\/p>\n<p>The dollar <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/07\/16\/markets\/dollar.reut\/index.htm\">fell as well<\/a>, on increased optimism by investors, who have moved their money to more speculative ventures.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yeah, it&#8217;s actually yesterday&#8217;s&#8230;.What can I say.
