{"id":191726,"date":"2009-07-01T23:07:00","date_gmt":"2009-07-02T04:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/07\/01\/on-having-60-democrats\/"},"modified":"2009-07-01T23:07:00","modified_gmt":"2009-07-02T04:07:00","slug":"on-having-60-democrats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/07\/01\/on-having-60-democrats\/","title":{"rendered":"On Having 60 Democrats"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 0px 10px; width: 362px; float: right; text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img21.imageshack.us\/img21\/1782\/20090701frankendoorplat.jpg\" bordercolor=\"white\" border=\"0\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<p>OK, so Al Franken is <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">finally<\/span> going to be seated.<\/p>\n<p>The question is two fold, what <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">does<\/span> this mean, and what <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">should<\/span> this mean?<\/p>\n<p>Ignoring the health issues of Byrd and Kennedy,<sup>*<\/sup> which means that Democrats are theoretically able to get cloture in the event of a Republican filibuster.<\/p>\n<p>The question is, &#8220;Will they?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, managing Senators is like herding cats, so one cannot expect them, particularly on the Democratic side of the aisle, to vote for every bit of legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Voting on cloture, however, should a different thing, though I&#8217;ve very little confidence in Senate Leader Reid enforcing this.<\/p>\n<p>As voters, and potential campaign contributors, I would suggest <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">not<\/span> contributing to the DSCC and instead contributing to individual campaigns, with Dem Senators  who vote against cloture healthcare or global legislation getting nothing.<\/p>\n<p><sup>*<\/sup><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">Which is a lot like saying, &#8220;Other Than That, Mrs. Lincoln, How Was the Play?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OK, so Al Franken is finally going to be seated.
