{"id":191848,"date":"2009-06-17T17:16:00","date_gmt":"2009-06-17T22:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/06\/17\/economics-update-198\/"},"modified":"2009-06-17T17:16:00","modified_gmt":"2009-06-17T22:16:00","slug":"economics-update-198","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/06\/17\/economics-update-198\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, we have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=aE9AA32hx8ek\">the inflation numbers for May<\/a>, and the CPI was up 0.1% over April, and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">down<\/span> 1.3% year over year, the biggest price decline since April, 1950.<\/p>\n<p>The deflation would have been worse, but for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\/id\/31404426\">ramp up in retail gasoline prices<\/a>, which continues on its tear, with <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/06\/17\/news\/economy\/gas_prices\/index.htm\">prices having risen for 50 straight days<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the mean time, banking is getting interesting, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=aRvZ0BWMfEWk\">S&amp;P cutting ratings on 18 major banks<\/a>, including Wells Fargo, Capital One, BB&amp;T.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, you have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601110&amp;sid=apMlie3d5Tps\">credit default swaps (<span>CDS<\/span>) have shown their largest 3 day in over 3 months<\/a>, which indicates that there is a belief that the risks of default on corporate bonds is getting worse.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=aQ7aiswaz6lQ\">treasuries have staged a mini-rally<\/a>, with prices up and yields down, is either a measure of concern about corporate bonds, or relief about the low inflation numbers, I&#8217;m not sure which.<\/p>\n<p>Real estate is full of mixed signals.  Mortgage applications <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\/id\/31402594\">fell to a 7 month low<\/a>, largely on the relatively high interest rates, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601110&amp;sid=arg14olLEFUc\">mortgage bond yields have been falling for a week<\/a>, which would point toward lower rates in the future.<\/p>\n<p>The low inflation is perceived, to be a good marker for recovery, which <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/06\/17\/markets\/dollar.reut\/index.htm\">pushed the dollar down<\/a>, because of less demand for the $US safe haven.<\/p>\n<p>Oil is getting just plain <span>flaky<\/span>.  It <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/06\/17\/markets\/oil\/\">finished the day up<\/a>, to $71.03\/bbl, though it dropped like a stone earlier in the day following news that gasoline stockpiles rose by 3.4 million bbl this week.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not certain where oil is going, but the recent volatility seems to indicate that it is going <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">somewhere<\/span> in the near term, probably up.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, we have the inflation numbers for May, and the CPI was up 0.1% over April, and down 1.3% year over year, the biggest price decline since April, 1950.
