{"id":191858,"date":"2009-06-16T17:21:00","date_gmt":"2009-06-16T22:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/06\/16\/now-this-is-good-policy\/"},"modified":"2009-06-16T17:21:00","modified_gmt":"2009-06-16T22:21:00","slug":"now-this-is-good-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/06\/16\/now-this-is-good-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Now This is Good Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The House Ways and Means Committee  is considering generating additional $37 billion in additional revenue by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601110&amp;sid=aeEJZicjYE60\">removing the deductiblity of direct to consumer advertising for prescription drugs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Chairman, Charles Rengel is talking about it favorably, and I think it does good on a number of levels:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It generates more taxes.<\/li>\n<li>It reduces the artificial demand for the new under patent prescription drugs that are frequently not much better than their predecessors.<\/li>\n<li>It redirects sales efforts to the doctors, who are better equipped to weigh the merits.<\/li>\n<li>It would likely make drug companies more amenable to moving their drugs to over-the-counter, where they <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">could<\/span> deduct the ads, saving <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">everyone<\/span> money.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The House Ways and Means Committee is considering generating additional $37 billion in additional revenue by removing the deductiblity of direct to consumer advertising for prescription drugs.
