{"id":192023,"date":"2009-05-21T17:27:00","date_gmt":"2009-05-21T22:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/05\/21\/a-battle-obama-needs-to-lose\/"},"modified":"2009-05-21T17:27:00","modified_gmt":"2009-05-21T22:27:00","slug":"a-battle-obama-needs-to-lose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/05\/21\/a-battle-obama-needs-to-lose\/","title":{"rendered":"A Battle Obama Needs To Lose"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>And hopefully,  he already might have lost.<\/p>\n<p>There was every <span>indication<\/span> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollcall.com\/issues\/54_128\/news\/34766-1.html\">a knock down drag out fight inside the Democratic party over the Panama free trade agreement<\/a>, dealing with the fact that it did <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">nothing<\/span> about Panamanian money laundering or labor and environmental protections.<\/p>\n<p>Well, after over 50 Dem Representatives sent a letter on this matter, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601110&amp;sid=an4UrFod68oI\">Obama agreed to hold back on submitting the Panama free trade deal until there is a &#8220;framework&#8221; for protecting labor and the environment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the unspoken consensuses in Washington, DC is that a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">bad<\/span> free trade deal is better than <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">no<\/span> free trade deal, because free trade, raises living standards, spreads democracy, prevents rain on picnics, and keeps your daughter from dating the guy with the studs and tattoos.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t believe that this pause is real.  It is merely a ploy to get the votes he needs to pass the deal(s), which also include Columbia and Korea.<\/p>\n<p>When you look at the people around him, like <span>Austan<\/span> <span>Goolsbee<\/span>, it&#8217;s pretty clear that these folks are free trade (except when it comes to <span>IP<\/span>) fanatics, and they keep coming back until they either win, or are slapped down firmly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>And hopefully, he already might have lost.
