{"id":192118,"date":"2009-05-09T14:59:00","date_gmt":"2009-05-09T19:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/05\/09\/defense-budget-finally-out\/"},"modified":"2009-05-09T14:59:00","modified_gmt":"2009-05-09T19:59:00","slug":"defense-budget-finally-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/05\/09\/defense-budget-finally-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Defense Budget Finally Out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, the details are out, and we have a big, confusing, and sprawling story from a big confusing, and sprawling building, the Pentagon.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some links, and some things that I find noteworthy.<\/p>\n<p>Specific programs:<\/p>\n<p>With $439 million budgeted, the USAF is definitely <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dodbuzz.com\/2009\/05\/08\/af-budgets-439m-for-tanker\/\">going full speed on the tanker replacement bidding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Next Generation Bomber and the F-136 alternate JSF engine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/aw\/blogs\/defense\/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&amp;plckScript=blogScript&amp;plckElementId=blogDest&amp;plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&amp;plckPostId=Blog%3A27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post%3Afb28ab0c-ffc2-4e1c-92a7-1ca9444d5546&amp;plckCommentSortOrder=TimeStampAscending\">are on the chopping block<\/a>, and the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Gerald Ford<\/span> class aircraft carrier has been delayed a year to work out the bugs on its electric catapults.<\/p>\n<p>Star Wars <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/dangerroom\/2009\/05\/flying-lightsaber-zapped-multiple-kill-vehicle-killed\/\">takes a hit<\/a>, with both the multiple kill vehicle and the airborne laser being canceled.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img7.imageshack.us\/img7\/5272\/03b373c6e976442486337a7.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/aw\/blogs\/defense\/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&amp;plckScript=blogScript&amp;plckElementId=blogDest&amp;plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&amp;plckPostId=Blog%3A27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post%3Aa891ef31-26e7-4721-9e9f-0e584c51fa54\">UAV&#8217;s did very well<\/a>, with the Raven (shown) getting over 700 orders.<\/p>\n<p>Aviation:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/blogs\/the-dewline\/2009\/05\/us-defense-budget-aircraft-cha.html\">The DEW Line<\/a> has a rundown.<\/p>\n<p>Classified:<\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon classified budget is now, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/aw\/blogs\/defense\/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&amp;plckScript=blogScript&amp;plckElementId=blogDest&amp;plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&amp;plckPostId=Blog%3A27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post%3A07d043ca-ceaf-4d4b-a260-7a4c0f59d581\">up above $50 billion<\/a>, which, on its own, makes the black programs something like the 3rd largest military budget in the world.<\/p>\n<p>US Army:<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/aw\/blogs\/defense\/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&amp;plckScript=blogScript&amp;plckElementId=blogDest&amp;plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&amp;plckPostId=Blog%3A27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post%3A6c119d32-88a2-4596-97c9-2f005b1b299e\">spending on Helos is up<\/a>, as are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dodbuzz.com\/2009\/05\/07\/helos-drones-up-fcs-down-for-army\/\">both unmanned vehicles and the number of active duty soldiers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Navy:<\/p>\n<p>We already know the story, cancellation of the DDG-100, restart of the Brukes, and continued procurement of the LCS, more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/aw\/blogs\/defense\/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&amp;plckScript=blogScript&amp;plckElementId=blogDest&amp;plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&amp;plckPostId=Blog%3A27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post%3Aee9fa232-18d8-434b-97f7-042da363e370\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defensetech.org\/archives\/004836.html\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/informationdissemination.blogspot.com\/2009\/05\/first-impressions-fy2010-navy-budget.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Short version, it&#8217;s a generally down, but the Navy has done OK.<\/p>\n<p>USAF<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img19.imageshack.us\/img19\/4207\/29886426499d3c053d2o837.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" \/>Basically, talk to the deer.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/aw\/blogs\/defense\/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&amp;plckScript=blogScript&amp;plckElementId=blogDest&amp;plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&amp;plckPostId=Blog%3A27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post%3Ab50812fa-d92d-4486-b31c-ddb6b3683b8f\">USAF did not fare well<\/a>, with the end of the F-22 and C-17 production lines, underfunding of the Air Force One replacement, the Joint Dual-Role Air Dominance Missile (JDRADM), and the follow on to the Predator drone, and the cancellation of the TSAT satellite system.<\/p>\n<p>Cost Guard:<\/p>\n<p>Not the Pentagon, it&#8217;s technically in the Department of Commerce, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/aw\/blogs\/defense\/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&amp;plckScript=blogScript&amp;plckElementId=blogDest&amp;plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&amp;plckPostId=Blog%3A27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post%3Abd34db35-662b-4f75-8071-b6470f16efa2\">its budget is up by about 3%<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, the details are out, and we have a big, confusing, and sprawling story from a big confusing, and sprawling building, the Pentagon.
