Barry, who literally <a href=\"http:\/\/johnmbarry.com\/_i_the_great_influenza__the_epic_story_of_the_deadliest_plague_in_history__i__58204.htm\">wrote the book on<\/a> the Spanish Influenza Pandemic, has an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/04\/28\/opinion\/28barry.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss&amp;pagewanted=all\">article on the Swine Flue outbreak<\/a> that is a must read.<\/p>\n<p>I also need to read his book.<\/p>\n<p>I had not previously realized that the initial Spring outbreak was <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">very<\/span> mild, and it was the Autumn outbreak that had the virulence that we now remember the disease for.<\/p>\n<p>Money quote is at the end:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>In all four instances [Influenza Pandemics], the gap between the time the virus was first recognized and a second, more dangerous wave swelled was about six months. It will take a minimum of four months to produce vaccine in any volume, possibly longer, and much longer than that to produce enough vaccine to protect most Americans.
