{"id":192258,"date":"2009-04-23T17:24:00","date_gmt":"2009-04-23T22:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/04\/23\/economics-update-236\/"},"modified":"2009-04-23T17:24:00","modified_gmt":"2009-04-23T22:24:00","slug":"economics-update-236","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/04\/23\/economics-update-236\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, we have the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/30364456\">new jobless claims out<\/a>, and again, they are grim, with initial claims raising from 613K to 640K, though the 4 week moving average, which is a better indicator, dropped to 646,750 from 651,000.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing claims hit another record, up 93K to 6.137 million, worse than the forecast.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/topNews\/idUSTRE53M48M20090423?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=topNews\">mass layoffs, more than 50 people, hit a record<\/a>, with 2,933 in March, probably had something to do with this.<\/p>\n<p>In world finance, we have <a href=\"http:\/\/ftalphaville.ft.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/23\/55040\/moodys-downgrades-lithuania-latvia\/?source=rss\">Moody\u2019s downgrading the debt of the Baltic Republics Lithuania and Latvia<\/a>, indicating a bumpy way ahead.<\/p>\n<p>In real estate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realtor.org\/press_room\/news_releases\/2009\/04\/march_ehs\">March existing home sales fell<\/a>, and with <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/04\/23\/news\/economy\/mortgage_rates\/index.htm?postversion=2009042311\">mortgage rates inching up<\/a>, I would not expect a significant improvement in the situation.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/04\/23\/markets\/oil\/\">oil is up<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/04\/23\/markets\/dollar\/index.htm\">dollar is down<\/a>, for reasons not clear to me.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, we have the new jobless claims out, and again, they are grim, with initial claims raising from 613K to 640K, though the 4 week moving average, which is a better indicator, dropped to 646,750 from 651,000.
