{"id":192354,"date":"2009-04-08T17:29:00","date_gmt":"2009-04-08T22:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/04\/08\/zimbabwe-update-10\/"},"modified":"2009-04-08T17:29:00","modified_gmt":"2009-04-08T22:29:00","slug":"zimbabwe-update-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/04\/08\/zimbabwe-update-10\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Not a whole bunch of conflict lately, and <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/africa\/7962998.stm\">inflation is beginning to moderate<\/a>, though much of that is because the economy is moving off the local currency.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a good sign, as are reports that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news24.com\/News24\/Africa\/Zimbabwe\/0,,2-11-1662_2497562,00.html\">media restrictions will be relaxed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It also looks like the MDC majority in Parliament is actually doing something, as they are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inthenews.co.uk\/news\/world\/autocodes\/countries\/zimbabwe\/zimbabwe-parliament-probe-police-torture-allegations-$1282293.htm\">looking to probe reports of police abuses<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We also have the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/rbssIndustryMaterialsUtilitiesNews\/idUSBNG42639020090403\">Blanket gold mine reopening<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, at least on the symbolic level, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/africaandindianocean\/zimbabwe\/5096871\/Nineteen-MDC-ministers-accept-Zimbabwe-government-Mercedes.html\">19 MDC ministers have accepted the offer of Mercedes Benz autos from Mugabe<\/a>, which looks very bad.<\/p>\n<p>We also have the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/afp\/article\/ALeqM5gZmPUp8PMNIaUAqeP-ubEzbJaQ7w\">IMF doing what it does best<\/a>, making a financial disaster worse, and crushing the ordinary people beneath its treads.<\/p>\n<p>What Mugabe won&#8217;t destroy, the IMF will.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voanews.com\/english\/2009-04-03-voa22.cfm\">relaxed restrictions on Zimbabwean refugees<\/a>, offering a 6 month visa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not a whole bunch of conflict lately, and inflation is beginning to moderate, though much of that is because the economy is moving off the local currency.
