{"id":192595,"date":"2009-03-15T20:22:00","date_gmt":"2009-03-16T01:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/03\/15\/not-enough-bullets-aig-yet-again\/"},"modified":"2009-03-15T20:22:00","modified_gmt":"2009-03-16T01:22:00","slug":"not-enough-bullets-aig-yet-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/03\/15\/not-enough-bullets-aig-yet-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Not Enough Bullets, AIG  Yet Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This time it appears that AIG is paying either <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/03\/15\/business\/15AIG.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss&amp;pagewanted=all\">$165 million<\/a>, or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/news\/story\/AIG-pay-450-mln-bonuses\/story.aspx?guid=%7BD69E1883-8A00-4F59-9DED-E701E15D9A59%7D&amp;dist=hplatest\">$450 million<\/a> to senior employees of their financial products division, the one which bankrupted the firm through their credit default swap (CDS) business.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that the treasury, who, you know, manages AIG on behalf or the taxpayers, who now <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">own of 80% of the bankrupt in everything but name only<\/span> firm, were <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">told<\/span> by AIG president Edward Liddy that these were contracts, and so they <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">had<\/span> to honor them:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[Obama economic guru Larry] <span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\">Summers said the government would examine its options, but he acknowledged it might not be able to terminate prior bonus agreements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\">&#8220;We are a country of law. There are contracts. The government cannot just abrogate contracts,&#8221; he said in an interview Sunday on ABC&#8217;s &#8220;This Week.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\">AIG is already scheduled to pay $121.5 million in incentive payments for 2008 to senior executives and 6,400 of its employees. And AIG is laying out another $619 million for 2009 in retention payments to more than 4,000 employees.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\">Total expected payments amount to almost $1.2 billion. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Somehow, the contracts signed with auto workers must be renegotiated, but those signed with <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">failed and incompetent<\/span> financial executives must be supported.<\/p>\n<p>Seriously, the US government claim of impotence in the face of a contract is a reflection of the fact that Mssrs. Summers and Geithner are creatures of the corrupt financial industry on Wall Street, and cannot see beyond this.<\/p>\n<p>If I had to choose between Vladimir Lenin and Timothy Geithner at Treasury, I would be <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">very<\/span> hard pressed to choose.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This time it appears that AIG is paying either $165 million, or $450 million to senior employees of their financial products division, the one which bankrupted the firm through their credit default swap (CDS) business.
