{"id":192737,"date":"2009-02-27T00:09:00","date_gmt":"2009-02-27T05:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/02\/27\/obama-budget-plan\/"},"modified":"2009-02-27T00:09:00","modified_gmt":"2009-02-27T05:09:00","slug":"obama-budget-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/02\/27\/obama-budget-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama Budget Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/02\/26\/news\/economy\/obama_budget_outline\/index.htm?postversion=2009022612\">decent plan<\/a>, though <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">once again<\/span>, it appears to not go quite far enough.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He&#8217;s rolling back the Bush tax cuts at the top tax brackets, though I think that the max marginal rate should made <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">far<\/span> higher, something like the 70% we had <span>pre<\/span>-Reagan for income above $5 million\/year or so.<\/li>\n<li>He&#8217;s spending $634 billion on expanding <span>healthcare<\/span> access, which is good, but the real need exceeds $1 trillion.<\/li>\n<li>Closes some of the more egregious tax loopholes.<\/li>\n<li>Cuts farm aid to big farms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He is also estimating a decent bit of revenue from a carbon cap-and-trade system, which I think is in error.  He underestimates the costs of enforcement, speculative pressures, and evasion, which is why I favor a straight carbon tax.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s a decent plan, though once again, it appears to not go quite far enough.
