{"id":192902,"date":"2009-02-07T06:17:00","date_gmt":"2009-02-07T11:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/02\/07\/what-are-they-smoking\/"},"modified":"2009-02-07T06:17:00","modified_gmt":"2009-02-07T11:17:00","slug":"what-are-they-smoking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/02\/07\/what-are-they-smoking\/","title":{"rendered":"What Are They Smoking?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Russia and India now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/articles\/2009\/02\/05\/322126\/india-and-russia-aim-to-fly-joint-fifth-generation-fighter-by.html\">have an in-service date for their joint next generation fighter program<\/a>, the PAK-FA, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>This simply is <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">not<\/span> going to happen that soon, particularly when India is still unsatisfied with the level of technology transfer, and they haven&#8217;t yet agreed on the number of crew (Russia wants a single seater, India a 2-seater).<\/p>\n<p>They <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">may<\/span> have a demonstrator, at a maturity level of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.military-today.com\/aircraft\/mikoyan_mig_mfi.htm\">MiG MFI<\/a>, or the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Aerospace_EAP\">BAE EAP<\/a> in the next 5 years, but the former never saw production, and the successor to the latter the Typhoon, did enter service until more than a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">decade<\/span> after it rolled out.<\/p>\n<p>If this ever enters service, I&#8217;d my guess is that it would be closer to 2025 than 2017.<\/p>\n<p>And the P-80 was 180 days from proposal to first flight&#8230;&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Russia and India now have an in-service date for their joint next generation fighter program, the PAK-FA, 2017.
