{"id":192976,"date":"2009-01-30T18:17:00","date_gmt":"2009-01-30T23:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/01\/30\/zimbabwe-update-13\/"},"modified":"2009-01-30T18:17:00","modified_gmt":"2009-01-30T23:17:00","slug":"zimbabwe-update-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/01\/30\/zimbabwe-update-13\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It looks like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iht.com\/articles\/ap\/2009\/01\/30\/africa\/AF-Zimbabwe.php\">MDC will join the ZANU-PF in a unity government<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, it appears that the MDC will have no control of the state security apparatus, so I&#8217;m wondering if this will be as hollow as Nkomo entering government.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, right now, government actually has to work, with current cases of cholera estimated to be in excess of 60,000, and the currency so debased that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/worldNews\/idUSTRE50S2BW20090129?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=worldNews\">foreign currencies will now be allowed to be officially used in commerce<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I think that 5 years from now, there will be no Zimbabwean dollar at all.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/euobserver.com\/9\/27479\">EU has tightens sanctions on prominent ZANU-PF members<\/a>, but I don&#8217;t thing that this will amount to much<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It looks like the MDC will join the ZANU-PF in a unity government.
