{"id":193034,"date":"2009-01-26T00:04:00","date_gmt":"2009-01-26T05:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/01\/26\/no-files\/"},"modified":"2009-01-26T00:04:00","modified_gmt":"2009-01-26T05:04:00","slug":"no-files","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/01\/26\/no-files\/","title":{"rendered":"No Files?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, in their eagerness to torture people, it appears that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2009\/01\/24\/AR2009012401702.html\">Bush and His Evil Minions<sup>\u2122<\/sup> never bother to assemble files on the Guantanamo detainees<\/a>, which makes an evaluation, much less a fair trial of the detainees.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonmonthly.com\/archives\/individual\/2009_01\/016593.php\"> Hilzoy notes<\/a>, &#8220;It takes, well, a special kind of administration to detain people for years on end<span style=\"font-style: italic;\"> without bothering to assemble case files on them<\/span>. I&#8217;m just glad they&#8217;re finally gone.&#8221;(<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">emphasis original<\/span>)<\/p>\n<p>Notwithstanding Bush&#8217;s insistence that the military commissions were the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">only<\/span> way to try these folks, this makes it clear that they never wanted trials, just torture.<\/p>\n<p>How bad was it?  Here are the last two &#8216;graphs of the WaPo article:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>In a court filing this month, Darrel Vandeveld, a former military prosecutor at Guantanamo who asked to be relieved of his duties, said evidence was &#8220;strewn throughout the prosecution offices in desk drawers, bookcases packed with vaguely-labeled plastic containers, or even simply piled on the tops of desks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said he once accidentally found &#8220;crucial physical evidence&#8221; that &#8220;had been tossed in a locker located at Guantanamo and promptly forgotten.&#8221; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is not a serious attempt at competent prosecution or trial.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, in their eagerness to torture people, it appears that Bush and His Evil Minions\u2122 never bother to assemble files on the Guantanamo detainees, which makes an evaluation, much less a fair trial of the detainees.
