{"id":193041,"date":"2009-01-24T23:31:00","date_gmt":"2009-01-25T04:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/01\/24\/reports-that-gaza-death-toll-may-be-lower-than-reported\/"},"modified":"2009-01-24T23:31:00","modified_gmt":"2009-01-25T04:31:00","slug":"reports-that-gaza-death-toll-may-be-lower-than-reported","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/01\/24\/reports-that-gaza-death-toll-may-be-lower-than-reported\/","title":{"rendered":"Reports that Gaza Death Toll May Be Lower Than Reported"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While my original source, Ynetnews, should be viewed with a jaundiced eye, their report that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ynetnews.com\/articles\/0,7340,L-3660423,%2000.html\">death figures were inflated<\/a> is from the respected Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera, which as best as I can tell is a well respected center to center-left paper based in Milan.<\/p>\n<p>They <a href=\"http:\/\/74.125.95.100\/translate_c?hl=en&amp;sl=it&amp;tl=en&amp;u=http:\/\/www.corriere.it\/esteri\/09_gennaio_21\/denuncia_hamas_cremonesi_ac41c6f4-e802-11dd-833f-00144f02aabc.shtml&amp;prev=hp&amp;usg=ALkJrhiEwpTWEsRSslKTiumJUO_QSiJqRg\">quote a doctor as saying that deaths are likely in the 500-600 range<\/a> (Google translation, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.corriere.it\/esteri\/09_gennaio_21\/denuncia_hamas_cremonesi_ac41c6f4-e802-11dd-833f-00144f02aabc.shtml\">original Italian version<\/a>) , along with indications that a much higher number of the casualties were combatants than has been previously reported.<\/p>\n<p>This is not uncommon following such a conflict, when people presumed dead start heading home.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the dynamics in terms of public relations battle would tend create a situation where the Palestinians would be inclined to over report deaths in the first few days.<\/p>\n<p>There is a historical precedent, the<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Jenin\"> battle of Jenin<\/a>, where the initial reports of casualties were as high as 500 , and eventually were determined to be  52 to 56.<\/p>\n<p>I do not expect to see a 9.6:1 differential between initial and final numbers here, though.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While my original source, Ynetnews, should be viewed with a jaundiced eye, their report that death figures were inflated is from the respected Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera, which as best as I can tell is a well respected center to center-left paper based in Milan.
