{"id":193256,"date":"2009-01-05T18:22:00","date_gmt":"2009-01-05T23:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/01\/05\/economics-update-310\/"},"modified":"2009-01-05T18:22:00","modified_gmt":"2009-01-05T23:22:00","slug":"economics-update-310","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2009\/01\/05\/economics-update-310\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just so you know, the whole auto industry is in a tailspin.<\/p>\n<p>All the auto manufacturers are seeing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601110&amp;sid=auk6v.fvkIhM\">sales fall by more than 30%<\/a>, with Chrysler <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/News\/Story\/Story.aspx?guid=%7B42C807B3-C2FD-4F9A-905A-51DACE86F928%7D\">falling by a whopping 53%<\/a>, year-over-year.<\/p>\n<p>My guess as to Chrysler is that the American public realizes on some unconscious level that Cerberus is a pump and dump operation that cannot be trusted.<\/p>\n<p>In real estate, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601110&amp;sid=aJ6rW0_NwC_A\">construction spending was down by 0.6% from October to November<\/a>, which was better than the consensus estimate of 1.4%, which to my mind is a serious <span>WTF<\/span> number.  1.4% a month is Sta-<span>Puft<\/span> Marshmallow man time.<\/p>\n<p>In central-bank land, we have reports that <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/01\/04\/news\/economy\/fed_ecb_deflation.reut\/index.htm\">the Federal Reserve and the <span>ECB<\/span> are working together to avoid deflation<\/a>, which indicates that central bankers on the both sides of the pond are scared.<\/p>\n<p>The <span>ECB&#8217;s<\/span> only charter is to control inflation, but now they are trying to figure out how to get inflation <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">back<\/span> into their economies.<\/p>\n<p>No surprise that we are still seeing a flight to safety that is <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/01\/05\/markets\/dollar\/index.htm\">driving the dollar up<\/a> against both the Euro and Yen.<\/p>\n<p>In energy, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/01\/05\/markets\/oil\/\">oil is up again<\/a>, largely on concerns about the Middle East, and <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/01\/05\/news\/economy\/gas\/index.htm\">retail gasoline was up 1.4\u00a2\/gal<\/a>, the 6<span>th<\/span> straight day in a row, which seems to indicate that gas prices will be rising in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, here is a pretty picture:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img78.imageshack.us\/img78\/7985\/ism2bmanbr9.gif\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" \/>It&#8217;s a measure of the ISM Manufacturing index (I mentioned this last week).
