Goodman and Gretchen Morgenson have what might be the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/12\/28\/business\/28wamu.html?hp\">single most entertaining account of bank mismanagement of the year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They recount the story of WaMu, and start by quoting former CEO Kerry K. Killinger&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>We hope to do to this industry what Wal-Mart did to theirs, Starbucks did to theirs, Costco did to theirs and Lowe\u2019s-Home Depot did to their industry. And I think if we\u2019ve done our job, five years from now you\u2019re not going to call us a bank.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, he&#8217;s right, it&#8217;s 5 years later, and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">nobody<\/span> is calling Washington Mutual a bank anymore.<\/p>\n<p>But it gets even better when they interview a former supervisor at a WaMu mortgage processing center, John D. Parsons, who is now in prison on drug charges:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>Yet even by WaMu\u2019s relaxed standards, one mortgage four years ago raised eyebrows. The borrower was claiming a six-figure income and an unusual profession: <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">mariachi singer<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Parsons could not verify the singer\u2019s income, so <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">he had him photographed in front of his home dressed in his mariachi outfit<\/span>. The photo went into a WaMu file. <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">Approved<\/span><\/span>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">emphasis mine<\/span>)<\/p>\n<p>Yog-Sothoth&#8217;s Yam Yogurt, this is eerily reminiscent of the Tulip Mania of 1637.<\/p>\n<p>H\/T <a href=\"http:\/\/wallstreetjackass.typepad.com\/raptureready\/2008\/12\/the-funniest-thing-you-will-read-all-week.html\">Wallstreetjackass<\/a> for noticing this bit of absurdity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Peter S.
