{"id":193470,"date":"2008-12-13T09:04:00","date_gmt":"2008-12-13T14:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/12\/13\/son-of-hotol\/"},"modified":"2008-12-13T09:04:00","modified_gmt":"2008-12-13T14:04:00","slug":"son-of-hotol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/12\/13\/son-of-hotol\/","title":{"rendered":"Son of HOTOL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aerospaceweb.org\/question\/spacecraft\/q0202.shtml\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img71.imageshack.us\/img71\/7310\/hotoltrolley0118004bo9.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a>When I was in college, I recall, reading about a British program called HOTOL (<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Ho<\/span>rizontal <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">T<\/span>ake-<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">O<\/span>ff and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">L<\/span>anding, click picture to be taken to a page on it) which was supposed to use a &#8220;liquid air&#8221; engine in order to more efficiently reach orbit.<\/p>\n<p>A short description of the cycle was that it was fueled with LH<sub>2<\/sub> and for much of the way up, it would use the cold liquid hydrogen to extract liquid oxygen out of the air.<\/p>\n<p>It got canceled, or more accurately, when the program ended it was not taken to the next phase.<\/p>\n<p>I kind of figured that technical issues, my guess at the time (which appears to be wrong) was getting the heat exchangers small enough and light enough.<\/p>\n<p>The real problem appeared to be that the engine was heavy, and in an aft mounting configuration, maintaining the center of lift far enough aft compromised performance.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img68.imageshack.us\/img68\/2244\/aw120820082208l9321238qe4.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" width=\"400\" \/>In any case, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationnow.com\/publication\/awst\/loggedin\/AvnowStoryDisplay.do?fromChannel=awst&amp;pubKey=awst&amp;issueDate=2008-12-08&amp;story=xml\/awst_xml\/2008\/12\/08\/AW_12_08_2008_p56-100992.xml\">a company called Reaction Engines are having another go at the concept with the Skylon<\/a>, (<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">paid subscription required<\/span>) , which uses the Sabre (<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">S<\/span>ynergic <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">A<\/span>ir-<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Br<\/span>eathing <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">E<\/span>ngine).<sup>*<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img68.imageshack.us\/img68\/3614\/aw120820082207l9315226ie3.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" width=\"400\" \/>As is clear from the picture, they dealt with the CG issues by placing the heavy engines at the center of lift on the wing tips.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s supposed to function as an air-breather until it reaches 30km altitude and &#8220;around Mach 5&#8221;, and then function as a normal liquid fueled rocket the rest of the way up to orbit.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img397.imageshack.us\/img397\/4875\/aw120820082209l9329721pj0.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" width=\"400\" \/>They are looking at testing a 9% scale precooler (left) in January on a test stand, using a RR Viper turbojet behind the cooler (left below)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img397.imageshack.us\/img397\/3810\/aw120820082210l9383741za1.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" width=\"400\" \/>There are two problems with Liquid Air Cycle Engines (LACE), hydrogen embrittlement of the heat exchanger, and condensation of water and CO<sub>2<\/sub> on the heat exchanger, which will plug it up.<\/p>\n<p>It solves these problems by not cooling the air to full liquid state, but instead having a high-pressure turbo compressor behind the air to liquefy it, and by using helium as an intermediate medium for the heat exchanger, along with an unspecified proprietary frost control technique.
