{"id":193566,"date":"2008-12-06T08:55:00","date_gmt":"2008-12-06T13:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/12\/06\/blow-up-uavs\/"},"modified":"2008-12-06T08:55:00","modified_gmt":"2008-12-06T13:55:00","slug":"blow-up-uavs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/12\/06\/blow-up-uavs\/","title":{"rendered":"Blow Up UAVs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img389.imageshack.us\/img389\/1183\/feb27d4c385d44b6854c8efnk5.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" \/>It looks like the folks at U.S. Army Research Laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/aw\/blogs\/defense\/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&amp;plckScript=blogScript&amp;plckElementId=blogDest&amp;plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&amp;plckPostId=Blog%3A27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post%3A6a851d7c-fdf3-4197-ae66-50319f60448f\">come up with concepts for inflatable structures for UAVs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The folks at the lab believe that the use of inflatable structures would allow for lighter weight, which translates into slower flight speeds and less noise, both of which are optimal for the use of UAVs in an urban scenario.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img150.imageshack.us\/img150\/2420\/gooyearinflatoplaneinairi9.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" width=\"400\" \/>Goodyear did actually develop and fly an inflatable aircraft, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Goodyear_Inflatoplane\">Inflatoplane<\/a>, in the 1950s, but the army decided it was too vulnerable to ground fire, and shelved the project.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img154.imageshack.us\/img154\/787\/rubberplane02cz3.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" width=\"200\" \/>Still, it has always surprised me that someone in the ultralight community did not go further forward with this.
