{"id":193624,"date":"2008-12-02T00:03:00","date_gmt":"2008-12-02T05:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/12\/02\/google-ads-there-are-still-a-few-bugs-in-the-system\/"},"modified":"2008-12-02T00:03:00","modified_gmt":"2008-12-02T05:03:00","slug":"google-ads-there-are-still-a-few-bugs-in-the-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/12\/02\/google-ads-there-are-still-a-few-bugs-in-the-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Ads: There Are Still a Few Bugs in the System"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OK, so a few days ago, I serve up an excerpt from a <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/2008\/11\/atlas-shrugged-updated-for-current.html\">parody of Atlas Shrugged<\/a>, so what does Google ads serve up?<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/johngaltgifts.com\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img384.imageshack.us\/img384\/7177\/imgad5267428oc7.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Gifts for Proud Producers and Capitalists Everywhere!<\/a><sup>*<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Ummmm&#8230;.OK&#8230;I have nothing but contempt for Ayn Rand and <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/search?q=ayn+rand\">routinely mock her and her followers<\/a>, calling them &#8220;Randroids&#8221;, and in this case, I am spreading mockery of what she and her &#8220;Randroids&#8221; consider to be her magnum opus, and I get an ad serving a company dedicated to lionizing a horrible person and a lousy writer.<sup>\u2020<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Then again, perhaps the proprietor is mocking her too.  There is a notice at the bottom of the page:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>JohnGaltGifts.com is not in any way affiliated with or sponsored by the estate of Ayn Rand \u00ae, the Ayn Rand \u00ae Institute (ARI), Dr. Leonard Peikoff, or any other organization or company.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It appears to me that this means that the T-shirt and sticker maker is using the fruit of Ayn Rand&#8217;s intellectual output to enrich himself, which is specifically what Rand condemned.<\/p>\n<p>If that&#8217;s the case, it&#8217;s a very subtle and sophisticated parody.<\/p>\n<p><sup>*<\/sup><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">I&#8217;m linking because I&#8217;m complaining, it&#8217;s only fair.<\/span><br \/><sup>\u2020<\/sup><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">While I have never read <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Atlas Shrugged<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">nor do I intend to, <\/span>I <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">have<\/span> read <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-size:78%;\" >The Virtue of Selfishness<\/span><span style=\"font-size:78%;\"> in 1980 as part of a philosophy of literature class in high school, and it was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-size:78%;\" >awful<\/span><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">.
