{"id":193727,"date":"2008-11-20T23:07:00","date_gmt":"2008-11-21T04:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/11\/20\/that-economic-data-is-worse-than-it-looks\/"},"modified":"2008-11-20T23:07:00","modified_gmt":"2008-11-21T04:07:00","slug":"that-economic-data-is-worse-than-it-looks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/11\/20\/that-economic-data-is-worse-than-it-looks\/","title":{"rendered":"That Economic Data is Worse than It Looks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the common things that I&#8217;ve noticed since I&#8217;ve started following government economic data is that the preliminary data comes in better than the final data.<\/p>\n<p>When you compare month to month, you are comparing preliminary data to the prior month&#8217;s final data, so the delta, which is what the press covers, looks <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">much<\/span> better than what it is in reality.<\/p>\n<p>Well, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prospect.org\/csnc\/blogs\/beat_the_press_archive?month=11&amp;year=2008&amp;base_name=october_industrial_production\">Dean Baker just caught a doozy on October industrial production data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In bullet points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>September hurricanes artificially depressed that month&#8217;s stats.<\/li>\n<li>September data was then revised down.<\/li>\n<li>October preliminary data, which showed a &#8220;rise&#8221; is <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">flat<\/span> when comparing preliminary to preliminary.<\/li>\n<li>If you look at just manufacturing data, which strips out the noisier utility and mining segments, that number is <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">down<\/span> from September manufacturing data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the common things that I&#8217;ve noticed since I&#8217;ve started following government economic data is that the preliminary data comes in better than the final data.
