{"id":193858,"date":"2008-11-12T00:07:00","date_gmt":"2008-11-12T05:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/11\/12\/update-on-syrian-nuclear-reactor\/"},"modified":"2008-11-12T00:07:00","modified_gmt":"2008-11-12T05:07:00","slug":"update-on-syrian-nuclear-reactor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/11\/12\/update-on-syrian-nuclear-reactor\/","title":{"rendered":"Update on Syrian Nuclear Reactor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it now appears that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/aw\/blogs\/defense\/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&amp;plckScript=blogScript&amp;plckElementId=blogDest&amp;plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&amp;plckPostId=Blog%3A27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post%3A5d2f2c77-d07f-4a3b-a9cf-3f8b9af20e08\">the IAEA found traces of enriched Uranium at the alleged Syrian nuclear reactor site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that I was wrong, I figured that it was beyond their level of nuclear infrastructure to even try.<\/p>\n<p>On a related note, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/worldNews\/idUSTRE4AA45820081111?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=worldNews\">officials at the IAEA are seriously pissed off at whoever leaked the above data<\/a>, because they see it as, &#8220;an effort to prejudge the agency&#8217;s conclusions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Basically, it appears that the source of the contamination is not clear:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>The particles retrieved from some environmental swipe samples were of processed uranium &#8212; which could include the enriched version that in large quantities would fuel power plants or bombs, not of raw uranium ore, they said.<\/p>\n<p>Such traces, they said, could have been carried to the site inadvertently on scientists or workers or on equipment trucked in. Syria has one declared atomic site, a research reactor.<\/p>\n<p>A remote source could resemble a finding made in a long IAEA investigation of Iran&#8217;s secretive nuclear program.<\/p>\n<p>Bomb-grade uranium particles found by IAEA sleuths there were assessed to have come with used equipment obtained from Pakistan, not from any undeclared domestic production facility.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it now appears that the IAEA found traces of enriched Uranium at the alleged Syrian nuclear reactor site.
