{"id":194026,"date":"2008-10-30T21:13:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-31T02:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/10\/30\/for-the-record-strippers-dont-really-like-you-either\/"},"modified":"2008-10-30T21:13:00","modified_gmt":"2008-10-31T02:13:00","slug":"for-the-record-strippers-dont-really-like-you-either","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/10\/30\/for-the-record-strippers-dont-really-like-you-either\/","title":{"rendered":"For the record: Strippers don&#8217;t really like you either."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s he last line of the Nitpicker&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/nitpicker.blogspot.com\/2008\/10\/tale-of-two-buses.html\">commentary on the Maeve Reston disgraceful article<\/a>, which sounded like musings on the end of a marriage about the relationship between the press and John Sidney McCain III.<\/p>\n<p>It was headlined, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/politics\/la-na-maeve28-2008oct28,0,7533361,full.story\">McCain was frank, garrulous and accessible &#8212; and then he wasn&#8217;t<\/a>,&#8221; and I&#8217;m not sure who should be fired for it, Ms. Reston, or her editor.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a snippet:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>But I had come to respect McCain&#8217;s frankness and his willingness to admit he didn&#8217;t always have an answer. Watching the question morph into an embarrassing &#8220;gotcha moment&#8221; for cable television, my stomach churned and my cheeks grew hot.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It reads like a an effort by a 13 year old girl to write in the vein of the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">really<\/span> bad romance novels that she reads.<\/p>\n<p>Nitpicker wrote a great essay on this, but the last line should have been the headline, so I&#8217;m doing it here.  This bit at the end says it all:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(153, 51, 0);\"><p>It&#8217;s high time for reporters to realize candidates aren&#8217;t supposed to be their friends and, I would argue, being buddies with the people you cover would seem to me at least unprofessional, if not explicitly unethical. Obama seems to know this and I&#8217;d be willing to bet McCain knows it, too. I&#8217;m certain he&#8217;s not sitting around moaning about his lost friends in the press corps. I would even guess that it&#8217;s likely John McCain only tolerated having them so close and kissing their asses <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/04\/09\/AR2006040901291.html\">because<\/a> it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishworldreview.com\/cols\/simon052104.asp\">garnered<\/a> him &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/1008\/14982.html\">swooning<\/a>&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/bb\/media\/jan-june00\/mccain_2-14.html\">coverage<\/a> for a decade.<\/p>\n<p>For the record: <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Strippers don&#8217;t really like you either.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(<span style=\"font-style:italic;\">emphasis mine<\/span>)<\/p>\n<p>Everyone on the internet seems to be a better writer than I am.<\/p>\n<p>They also seem <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">much<\/span> less bald.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s he last line of the Nitpicker&#8217;s commentary on the Maeve Reston disgraceful article, which sounded like musings on the end of a marriage about the relationship between the press and John Sidney McCain III.
