{"id":194338,"date":"2008-10-04T07:39:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-04T12:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/10\/04\/brazil-shortlists-fighters\/"},"modified":"2008-10-04T07:39:00","modified_gmt":"2008-10-04T12:39:00","slug":"brazil-shortlists-fighters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/10\/04\/brazil-shortlists-fighters\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazil Shortlists Fighters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brazil is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/aw\/blogs\/defense\/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&amp;plckScript=blogScript&amp;plckElementId=blogDest&amp;plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&amp;plckPostId=Blog%3A27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post%3Ac9a39888-16ed-4dd3-b7b6-d9381d956695\">looking for fighters to replace it&#8217;s existing 1960s vintage fighter force<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It has now shortlisted the Super Hornet, Dassault Rafale and Gripen NG while dropping the Eurofighter Typhoon, F-16, and Su-35 from the competition.<\/p>\n<p>If they are looking at lifecycle costs, the Gripen wins, being half the weight of the competitors.<\/p>\n<p>If they are looking for an aircraft to operate of their carrier, the Rafale wins, because the F\/A-18 is really too big for their rather small carrier.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, they have an existing relationship with Dassault, as they leased Mirage 2000s from them.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, Stephen Trimble notes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/blogs\/the-dewline\/2008\/10\/brazil-catches-5thgen-fighter.html\">they are very interested in technology transfer<\/a>, wanting to rebuild their defense industry, which, after all, was half of the effort to build the Italo-Brazilian team that built AMX attack plane in the 1970s, so it may come down to who gives them the best technology transfer.<\/p>\n<p>My guess is that this competition is France&#8217;s to lose, but they have found innovative ways to lose export competitions recently.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brazil is looking for fighters to replace it&#8217;s existing 1960s vintage fighter force.
