{"id":194442,"date":"2008-09-22T19:36:00","date_gmt":"2008-09-23T00:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/09\/22\/bailout-plan-opinions\/"},"modified":"2008-09-22T19:36:00","modified_gmt":"2008-09-23T00:36:00","slug":"bailout-plan-opinions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/09\/22\/bailout-plan-opinions\/","title":{"rendered":"Bailout Plan Opinions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eschatonblog.com\/2008_09_14_archive.html#864366327560064201\">Atrios<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p><span style=\"font-size:130%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Deep Thought<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Any member of Congress who looks at the plan to give Hank unchecked power to transfer $700 billion from the Treasury to his friends&#8217; companies and has any reaction other than &#8216;You&#8217;ve got to be f%#@ing kidding me&#8217; does not deserve to hold office.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Krugman <a href=\"http:\/\/krugman.blogs.nytimes.com\/2008\/09\/20\/no-deal\/\">opposes the plan<\/a>, at least in the form presented by Henry Paulson, though he is more receptive to Chris Dodd&#8217;s version, which requires equity from the firms rescued for buying their part of the big sh$#pile.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/09\/20\/AR2008092001059.html?hpid=opinionsbox1\">Sebastian Mallaby<\/a>, who normally favors economics for the benefit of rich folk, hates the Paulson plan too.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/delong.typepad.com\/sdj\/2008\/09\/note-to-self-po.html\">Brad DeLong<\/a> is of a similar mind to Krugman.<\/p>\n<p>In <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The Nation<\/span>, William Greider calls the Paulson plan a, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/doc\/20081006\/greider\">historic swindle<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dean Baker, as is his wont, <a href=\"http:\/\/tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2008\/09\/20\/progressive_conditions_for_a_b\/\">gets into some fairly specific proposals<\/a> in some depth, which which I agree.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Reich <a href=\"http:\/\/tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2008\/09\/21\/what_wall_street_should_do_to\/index.php\">is less specific<\/a>, but he does add one specific proposal: allowing primary mortgages to be modified by a bankruptcy judge, with which I also agree.<\/p>\n<p>As for me, I will merely note that Henry Paulson holds hundreds of millions of dollars worth of shares on Goldman Sachs, and the idea that he get a blank check to work this is therefore nuts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Atrios Deep Thought Any member of Congress who looks at the plan to give Hank unchecked power to transfer $700 billion from the Treasury to his friends&#8217; companies and has any reaction other than &#8216;You&#8217;ve got to be f%#@ing kidding me&#8217; does not deserve to hold office.
