{"id":194564,"date":"2008-09-14T07:16:00","date_gmt":"2008-09-14T12:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/09\/14\/norwegian-and-dutch-fighter-competitions-saab-ups-gripen-ante\/"},"modified":"2008-09-14T07:16:00","modified_gmt":"2008-09-14T12:16:00","slug":"norwegian-and-dutch-fighter-competitions-saab-ups-gripen-ante","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/09\/14\/norwegian-and-dutch-fighter-competitions-saab-ups-gripen-ante\/","title":{"rendered":"Norwegian and Dutch Fighter Competitions, SAAB Ups  Gripen Ante"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Honestly, I think that both countries have alredy sunk so much money into the JSF, that it&#8217;s a lost cause, but you have to admire the dedication of the SAAB sales force.<\/p>\n<p>First, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/articles\/2008\/08\/25\/315163\/saab-submits-dutch-gripen-ng-offer-with-all-inclusive.html\">SAAB is offering an &#8220;all inclusive&#8221; bid<\/a>, including, &#8220;the 85 Gripen NGs, training, spares, simulators and support,&#8221; in addition to industrial offsets.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, they are claiming that the Gripen will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/articles\/2008\/09\/02\/315384\/saab-says-gripen-ng-will-save-netherlands-billions.html\">will be billions cheaper over the life of the aircraft<\/a>, which is likely true, as it weighs half as much.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, with the emphasis on remote austere basing, the Gripen probably wins in a COIN scenario like Iraq and Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>This is actually their strongest case, that the US DoD and Lockheed-Martin will be nickel and diming the JSF customers throughout the program, in addition to <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">still<\/span> not having a hard and fast price or delivery schedule.<\/p>\n<p>We also have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/aw\/blogs\/defense\/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&amp;plckScript=blogScript&amp;plckElementId=blogDest&amp;plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&amp;plckPostId=Blog%3A27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post%3Ac37bf741-e055-48ca-8c82-e7234d227276\">some of the PowerPoint slides from L-M and SAAB<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img523.imageshack.us\/img523\/1675\/53091e43ba564da897ca859cp3.jpg\" \/><br \/>LM Range Chart<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img523.imageshack.us\/img523\/554\/0ecb8e6b5a1b449d8648cfdos5.jpg\" \/><br \/>SAAB Chart<\/p>\n<p>Which appears to indicate that the Gripen has more range than the JSF, though I think that this is <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">not<\/span> an apples to apples comparison, as the Gripen is likely carrying external tanks for this.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, it appears that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/aw\/blogs\/defense\/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&amp;plckScript=blogScript&amp;plckElementId=blogDest&amp;plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&amp;plckPostId=Blog%3A27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post%3A6b5ed78d-035d-4757-ac28-081c4034aad2\">reports of the Typhoon reentering the competition were greatly exaggerated<\/a>, they still see it as a sucker&#8217;s game, though <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defencetalk.com\/news\/publish\/airforce\/Boeing_US_Navy_Offer_Super_Hornet_for_Denmark_Fighter_Competition100016373.php\">Boeing, and US Navy are offering the Super Hoenet<\/a> with the  APG-79 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar.<\/p>\n<p>One interesting monkey wrench thrown into the JSF&#8217;s path is that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defencetalk.com\/news\/publish\/airforce\/Negotiations_on_Joint_Strike_Fighter_Extended100016374.php\">the Dutch Economics Ministry appears to be trying to extract more money from the Dutch industrial JSF partners<\/a>, which would serve to raise costs of the aircraft to non-cloggie air forces.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Honestly, I think that both countries have alredy sunk so much money into the JSF, that it&#8217;s a lost cause, but you have to admire the dedication of the SAAB sales force.
