{"id":194636,"date":"2008-09-04T17:17:00","date_gmt":"2008-09-04T22:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/09\/04\/economics-update-380\/"},"modified":"2008-09-04T17:17:00","modified_gmt":"2008-09-04T22:17:00","slug":"economics-update-380","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/09\/04\/economics-update-380\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Things have seemed pretty hectic today.<\/p>\n<p>Normally I don&#8217;t mention this, I think that it is just noise, but <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/09\/04\/markets\/markets_newyork\/index.htm?postversion=2008090415\">all three major stock indices are down 3%+<\/a>, so while it&#8217;s not yet raining Katz and Lehmans, it&#8217;s pretty ugly.<\/p>\n<p>Note that this is my <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">economic<\/span> update post, so I&#8217;m not going to claim that a certain VP pick&#8217;s speech caused anything, and instead point at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/26542003\">jobless claims spiking unexpectedly by 15,000<\/a>, though truth be told, it should not cause that sort of reaction: the weekly data is simply too noisy for any rational investor to act upon the basis of those numbers.<\/p>\n<p>But this isn&#8217;t &#8220;rational investors&#8221; this be Wall Street, so it could have been the Lehman CEO&#8217;s choice of shoes today.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the financial news is no where near as definitive, and even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/news\/story\/fed-fed-officials-differ-inflation\/story.aspx?guid=%7BB9E71AC5-EA9B-493E-8105-B1976A42951E%7D&amp;dist=hplatest\">Federal Reserve officials are publicly disagreeing on whether the concern is recession or inflation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, even though the Bank of England and the ECB kept rates steady, the cost of money in Europe went up, because the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=aNo3NkvGjcZ8&amp;refer=home\">ECB has significantly tightened requirements to lend to banks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, the lack of rate hikes <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/09\/04\/markets\/dollar.ap\/index.htm?postversion=2008090412\">strengthened the dollar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/09\/04\/real_estate\/mortgage_survey\/index.htm\">Mortgage rates are down this week<\/a>, which would ordinarily be good news, but I think that &#8220;the markets&#8221; (and I) see this as a sign of a weakening economy, just as &#8220;the markets&#8221; (and I) <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/09\/04\/markets\/oil\/\">see declining oil prices<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/09\/04\/news\/economy\/gas_prices\/index.htm\">declining gas prices<\/a> as signs of a weakening economy.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, the <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/09\/04\/news\/economy\/ism_services\/index.htm\">numbers for the service sector were good<\/a>, so the blood on the street today is a bit odd.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it sucks to be a bank right now, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heraldtribune.com\/article\/20080901\/ARTICLE\/809010316\/2055\/NEWS&amp;title=Another_bank_is_deep_into_trouble_\">Community National Bank of Sarasota looking to be on the FDIC&#8217;s Friday afternoon press releases<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;refer=home&amp;sid=aQjsXBJ4uN1Y\">Lehman floating the idea of creating a &#8220;bad bank&#8221; to shift bad assets to<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Someone needs to explain the concept to me, because it seems to suffer from the, &#8220;We&#8217;ve run out of gullible idiots,&#8221; problem.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, it appears that <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/09\/04\/news\/companies\/aig_shares.ap\/index.htm\">insurance giant AIG is considering something similar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure how piling crap in a separate pile really helps anything.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Things have seemed pretty hectic today.
