{"id":194701,"date":"2008-08-25T23:01:00","date_gmt":"2008-08-26T04:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/08\/25\/nuclear-suppliers-group-throws-monkey-wrench-into-indo-american-civil-nuke-deal\/"},"modified":"2008-08-25T23:01:00","modified_gmt":"2008-08-26T04:01:00","slug":"nuclear-suppliers-group-throws-monkey-wrench-into-indo-american-civil-nuke-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/08\/25\/nuclear-suppliers-group-throws-monkey-wrench-into-indo-american-civil-nuke-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Nuclear Suppliers Group Throws Monkey Wrench into Indo-American Civil Nuke Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Which I consider to be a good thing.<\/p>\n<p>The idea that somehow the technical know-how that the French and the US nuclear industries are so interested in exporting to India won&#8217;t flow to their weapons&#8217; program is naive at best.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, the US is <a href=\"http:\/\/iht.com\/articles\/ap\/2008\/08\/23\/asia\/AS-India-Nuclear-Deal.php\">lobbying the 45 nation NSG to grant a waiver to India<\/a>, even though it will not sign the NNPT.<\/p>\n<p>This approval is necessary for the Indo-US deal to go through, and the NSG is looking at adding conditions to the waiver such as periodic reviews, a more intrusive inspection regime of civilian nuclear power plants, and a cancellation of the waiver in the event of additional Indian weapons testing.<\/p>\n<p>India has said that <a href=\"http:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/oilRpt\/idUKBOM10644320080825\">it would reject any such conditions<\/a> though, so it&#8217;s unclear where things go from here.<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, I see this as phenomenally bad policy being pushed by the US Nuclear power industry, and being supported by Bush and His Evil Minions<sup>&#8482;<\/sup> because they are reliable Republican donors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Which I consider to be a good thing.
