{"id":194794,"date":"2008-08-18T17:29:00","date_gmt":"2008-08-18T22:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/08\/18\/economics-update-390\/"},"modified":"2008-08-18T17:29:00","modified_gmt":"2008-08-18T22:29:00","slug":"economics-update-390","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/08\/18\/economics-update-390\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It looks like <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/08\/18\/news\/companies\/fannie_freddie\/index.htm?postversion=2008081812\">concerns about GSEs are roiling the markets again<\/a>, so one wonders when the government will nationalize Fannie and Freddie.<\/p>\n<p>It won&#8217;t happen under Bush and His Evil Minions<sup>&#8482;<\/sup>, needless to say, but I see it as inevitable for the next president.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, energy is still trending downwards, with <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/08\/18\/markets\/oil\/\">oil falling as the path of Fay becomes clearer<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/08\/18\/news\/economy\/fuel\/index.htm\">gasoline falling fo the 32nd straight day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/08\/18\/markets\/dollar\/index.htm\">dollar is down a bit<\/a>, but I&#8217;m not sure if this is a pause in a rally as people take profits, or a change in direction.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, it looks like <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/08\/18\/news\/economy\/laborday_travel.ap\/index.htm?postversion=2008081812\">labor day air travel is going to be way down<\/a>, yet another sign of the slowing economy, and the fact that airlines have become so bloody awful.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601068&amp;sid=a0YMieeK3mCs&amp;refer=home\">home prices in the UK fell by 4.8% year over year<\/a>, showing again just how well the &#8220;Anglo Saxon Model&#8221; of capitalism works when things go bad.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It looks like concerns about GSEs are roiling the markets again, so one wonders when the government will nationalize Fannie and Freddie.
