{"id":194888,"date":"2008-08-11T20:58:00","date_gmt":"2008-08-12T01:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/08\/11\/getting-georgias-war-on\/"},"modified":"2008-08-11T20:58:00","modified_gmt":"2008-08-12T01:58:00","slug":"getting-georgias-war-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/08\/11\/getting-georgias-war-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting Georgia&#8217;s War On"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>First, read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/doc\/20080818\/ames\">Getting Georgia&#8217;s War On<\/a> in <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The Nation<\/span>, if just for the revelation that that Georgian Prime Minister Lado Gurgenidze made an &#8220;investment call&#8221; to bank managers and analysts.<\/p>\n<p>The original offensive had been planned for some time.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, it appears that Russia was the first to call a Security Council meeting, but their proposal, which called for both sides to , &#8220;renounce the use of force&#8221;, was rejected by Georgia, the US, and the UK.<\/p>\n<p>I think that the <a href=\"http:\/\/firedoglake.com\/2008\/08\/11\/lets-bring-back-the-band\/\">best historical analogy out there<\/a> is care of Attaturk:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: #000099;\"><p>1836 to 1848<br \/>Georgia = Mexico<br \/>Russia = The United States<br \/>South Ossetia = Texas<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It  really is clear that the Ossetians hate the Georgians, and that the desire for independence is very real, though the ability is only because of Russian support.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Russia is rolling east from South Ossetia, and west from Abkhazia, and they are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iht.com\/articles\/2008\/08\/11\/europe\/12georgia.php\">demanding the disarming of troops along both borders<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Again, this is calling on the the Kosovo precedent, and I think is a sign that one of the goals of the Russians is the elimination of the Georgian army as a meaningful force.<\/p>\n<p>Certainly their <a href=\"http:\/\/en.apa.az\/news.php?id=86574\">capture Georgia\u2019s Senaki City and enterry into Zugdidi Town<\/a>, roughly 40km in Georgia from the Abkhazian border seems to confirm this.<\/p>\n<p>On the bright side, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.apa.az\/news.php?id=86542\">Dmitry Medvedev has stated that the military operation in South Ossetia is nearly over<\/a>, which should indicate a reduction of optempo shortly.<\/p>\n<p>You can read a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.apa.az\/news.php?id=86543\">summary of official Russian losses<\/a>, and they seem very light, though the loss of the Tu-22, by which I assume they mean Tu-22M Backfire, not the earlier Blinder, has to to hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Jed Lewison notes that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jedreport.com\/2008\/08\/not-putting-cou.html\">top foreign policy adviser, Randy Scheunemann, is a paid lobbyist for a foreign government, the Republic of Georgia<\/a>, he claims not to lobby for them any more, but his firm still gets fees from them, and that much of his lobbying were his <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">highly successful<\/span> efforts to turn McCain into an unthinking Georgia evangelist, though given McCain&#8217;s Russo-phobia, it probably took less than a golf game to do that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First, read Getting Georgia&#8217;s War On in The Nation, if just for the revelation that that Georgian Prime Minister Lado Gurgenidze made an &#8220;investment call&#8221; to bank managers and analysts.
