{"id":195021,"date":"2008-08-03T05:37:00","date_gmt":"2008-08-03T10:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/08\/03\/vjl-update\/"},"modified":"2008-08-03T05:37:00","modified_gmt":"2008-08-03T10:37:00","slug":"vjl-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/08\/03\/vjl-update\/","title":{"rendered":"VJL Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hmmm&#8230;.It looks like Cirrus is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationnow.com\/publication\/awst\/loggedin\/AvnowStoryDisplay.do?fromChannel=awst&amp;pubKey=awst&amp;issueDate=2008-07-28&amp;story=xml\/awst_xml\/2008\/07\/28\/AW_07_28_2008_p77-68106.xml&amp;headline=Cirrus+Forges+Ahead+with+Vision+SJ50+Test+Program\">developing a dingle engine business jet, the SJ50<\/a>, that looks an awful lot like the Eclipse 400 (previous posts <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/search?q=eclipse+400\">here<\/a>) that I discussed a couple of months ago.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s pretty clearly a form following function thing, rather than any outright copying.  There are relatively few configuration options for a single engine very light jet that the marketplace will accept.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly enough, it appears that Cirrus will sell it with a recovery chute, as it does on its piston engine models, which will be a challenge, given the higher speeds and energy involved.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img246.imageshack.us\/img246\/9691\/aw07282008407llj5.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>First, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/articles\/2008\/07\/31\/226258\/oshkosh-2008-the-future-has-sparkle-for-diamond.html\">Diamond International expects to certify its D-Jet and start deliveries some time in Q2 2009<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing as how their engine supplier is <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">not<\/span> Thielert or some other new entrant, it&#8217;s a Williams FJ-33-4A-19 turbofan, I would expect them to be on schedule.<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, I think that the single engine VLJ is likely to be a winner in the VLJ sweepstakes, because the operating costs will be lower.<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img523.imageshack.us\/img523\/131\/djetgt8.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the two jet VLG category, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/articles\/2008\/07\/31\/226261\/oshkosh-2008-adam-name-will-go-but-a700-is-back-on.html\">the Adam A700 has been rescued from bankruptcy<\/a>, albeit absent the &#8220;Adam&#8221; name, as AAI, who purchased the company out of receivership, thinks that there is some bad market mojo there.<\/p>\n<p>It appears to be among the most spacious of the VLJs, which may, or may not, be a function of its twin boom design.<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img402.imageshack.us\/img402\/432\/adamcq0.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/articles\/2008\/07\/30\/226255\/picture-piper-flies-piperjet.html\">Piper has flown it&#8217;s VLJ Piperjet<\/a>, which is another of the single engine VLJs, though it&#8217;s somewhat larger then the D-Jet, the Eclipse 400, and Cirrus Jet.<\/p>\n<p>It appears larger than its single engine competitors, but it just doesn&#8217;t look right.
