{"id":195150,"date":"2008-07-27T08:12:00","date_gmt":"2008-07-27T13:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/07\/27\/ddg-1000-procurement-halted-at-2-ships\/"},"modified":"2008-07-27T08:12:00","modified_gmt":"2008-07-27T13:12:00","slug":"ddg-1000-procurement-halted-at-2-ships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/07\/27\/ddg-1000-procurement-halted-at-2-ships\/","title":{"rendered":"DDG-1000 Procurement Halted at 2 Ships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is a good move, the ships are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/aw\/blogs\/defense\/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&amp;plckScript=blogScript&amp;plckElementId=blogDest&amp;plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&amp;plckPostId=Blog%3A27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post%3A9ce8d652-8231-410d-b878-05bf3a776dbf\">too big and too expensive<\/a>, costing at least 2\u00bd times that of the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Arleigh Burke<\/span>s that they are to replace.<\/p>\n<p>Susan Collins, the Senator from <strike>Bath Iron Works<\/strike> Maine, one of the two shipyards constructing the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Zumwalt<\/span>&#8216;s, appears to be resigned to the termination of the program, though <a href=\"http:\/\/collins.senate.gov\/public\/continue.cfm?FuseAction=PressRoom.PressReleases&amp;ContentRecord_id=502b71d6-802a-23ad-4bb0-3f60f1a93dfe&amp;Region_id=&amp;Issue_id=&amp;CFID=4467793&amp;CFTOKEN=30647111\">she wants more <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Burkes<\/span> to be constructed<\/a>, which are also made at BIW, which indicates that Congress won&#8217;t ram more DDG-1000s this down the Navy&#8217;s throat.<\/p>\n<p>I would expect to see some investigation on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/story.php?i=3639737&amp;c=AME&amp;s=SEA\">integrating some of the DDG 1000 specific systems into the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Burke<\/span>s<\/a>, specifically, the SPY-3 radar and the 155mm Advanced Gun System.<\/p>\n<p>Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Admiral Gary Roughead, has <a href=\"http:\/\/informationdissemination.blogspot.com\/2008\/07\/ddg-1000-review.html\">been highly critical of the program<\/a> since his appointment in September, 2007, and sent a letter to Sen.
