{"id":195244,"date":"2008-07-21T17:16:00","date_gmt":"2008-07-21T22:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/07\/21\/zimbabwe-update-24\/"},"modified":"2008-07-21T17:16:00","modified_gmt":"2008-07-21T22:16:00","slug":"zimbabwe-update-24","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/07\/21\/zimbabwe-update-24\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the bright side, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/07\/22\/world\/africa\/22zimbabwe.html?ref=africa\">Mugabe and Tsvangerai have signed an agreement to enter into negotiations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not optimistic about the outcome, as Mugabe is still engaging in retribution, and just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iht.com\/articles\/reuters\/2008\/07\/20\/africa\/OUKWD-UK-ZIMBABWE-CRISIS-NATIONALISATION.php\">threatened to expropriate &#8220;unfriendly&#8221; firms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Even more concerning is that <a href=\"http:\/\/iht.com\/articles\/2008\/07\/21\/africa\/22zimbabwe.php\">Thabo Mbeki appears to still be the only mediator involved in the process<\/a>, which seems to be a recipe for an &#8220;Epic Fail&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s clear that his clear favoritism toward Mugabe has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iht.com\/articles\/reuters\/2008\/07\/18\/europe\/OUKWD-UK-ZIMBABWE-CRISIS.php\">weakened the SADC<\/a>, the regional governmental organization, with a number of countries, most notably Zambia and Botswana, breaking with Mbeki&#8217;s accommodation of Mugabe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the bright side, Mugabe and Tsvangerai have signed an agreement to enter into negotiations.
