{"id":195261,"date":"2008-07-20T10:21:00","date_gmt":"2008-07-20T15:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/07\/20\/open-rotor-propulsion-research-getting-jump-started\/"},"modified":"2008-07-20T10:21:00","modified_gmt":"2008-07-20T15:21:00","slug":"open-rotor-propulsion-research-getting-jump-started","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/07\/20\/open-rotor-propulsion-research-getting-jump-started\/","title":{"rendered":"Open Rotor Propulsion Research Getting Jump Started"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, the GE-SNECMA joint venture CFM gas announced that they will be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/articles\/2008\/07\/14\/225325\/farnborough-2008-cfm-team-leaps-into-action-with-3g-engine-plan.html\">working on an advanced engine for the next generation of narrow body airliner (A320 and B-737) replacements<\/a> using what they call  Leap-X technologies.<\/p>\n<p>In addition they are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationnow.com\/publication\/awst\/loggedin\/AvnowStoryDisplay.do?fromChannel=awst&amp;pubKey=awst&amp;issueDate=2008-07-14&amp;story=xml\/awst_xml\/2008\/07\/14\/AW_07_14_2008_p0142-62045.xml&amp;headline=Open+Rotor+Research+Restarts\">teaming with NASA to apply these technoligies involved in this engine to an advanced open rotor concept<\/a> (<em>Paid Subscription Required<\/em>):<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/pic60.picturetrail.com\/VOL1689\/10590113\/19957526\/325959229.jpg\" \/><br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/pic60.picturetrail.com\/VOL1689\/10590113\/19957526\/325958362.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s clearly the same no-gearbox path that GE took in the late 1980s with its &#8220;un-ducted fan&#8221;, which was killed by lower oil costs and noise concerns regarding the counter-rotating fan interaction.<\/p>\n<p>The research, at least for now is about keeping the pressure ratio low on the fans to minimize noise levels.<\/p>\n<p>Rolls Royce is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationnow.com\/publication\/awst\/loggedin\/AvnowStoryDisplay.do?fromChannel=awst&amp;pubKey=awst&amp;issueDate=2008-07-14&amp;story=xml\/awst_xml\/2008\/07\/14\/AW_07_14_2008_p0142-62051.xml&amp;headline=Open+Rotor+Test+Rig+Begins+Work\">also working on open rotor studies<\/a> (<em>Paid Subscription Required<\/em>), though it&#8217;s concept is more conventional, with a gearbox.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s applying the EU funded DREAM research program, and will probably borrow quite a lot from the 10,000+ hp TP400 turboprop used on the A400 military transport.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/pic60.picturetrail.com\/VOL1689\/10590113\/19957526\/325958344.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the interesting things here is that both concepts show the same number of blades front and rear, which I think will change, because you get simultaneous interaction pulses from all the blades at once then, which means lots o&#8217; noise.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, the GE-SNECMA joint venture CFM gas announced that they will be working on an advanced engine for the next generation of narrow body airliner (A320 and B-737) replacements using what they call Leap-X technologies.
