News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/subscribe.condenet.com\/images_covers\/cover_newyorker_190.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"https:\/\/subscribe.condenet.com\/images_covers\/cover_newyorker_190.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Well, the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">New Yorker<\/span> just put our a new issue, and the cover is something else.<\/p>\n<p>David Remnick, the editor of the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">New Yorker<\/span>, defends the cover as &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2008\/07\/13\/david-remnick-on-emnew-yo_n_112456.html\">Satire, Meant To Target &#8220;Distortions And Misconceptions And Prejudices&#8221; About Obama<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So a cartoon showing Barack Obama in Muslim garb, with a flag burning in the fireplace, bin Laden&#8217;s portrait on the wall, fist bumping with an AK-47 toting Michelle Obama is satire.<\/p>\n<p>It may have been intended as such, but it&#8217;s not satire&#8230;or at the very least, it&#8217;s so poorly done that the satire is <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">invisible to the observer<\/span>, even one who is familiar with the magazine.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly enough, I think that the strongest critique, albeit an unintentional one, is a <a href=\"http:\/\/corner.nationalreview.com\/post\/?q=YzY3OGU2NTcwNDk0NGVlMzBlYWM2YTEyN2Y4OTI4Yjc=\">comment made by Jonah &#8220;Doughy Pantload&#8221; Goldberg in the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">National Review<\/span> Online<\/a>, he says that, &#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">It&#8217;s almost exactly the sort of cover you could expect to find on the front of <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">National Review<\/span><\/span>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Well, yes it is, but the long term racism of the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">National Revie<\/span>w is well known.  William F. Buckley was supporting segregation into the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>We expect the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">National Review<\/span> to be this stupid and racist.  We don&#8217;t expect the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">New Yorker<\/span> to be this stupid or racist.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, the New Yorker just put our a new issue, and the cover is something else.
